On the BBC news site there is an article about a driver going 14 Miles the wrong way on a Motorway (Freeway).

This is a very common problem and I don't understand it. The driver must be conscious and have a certain level of awareness to be able to psychically drive a car yet they don't notice the many signs that they are on the wrong side of the road.

Does anyone know how this happens? It is just one of those things that baffles me. Also I would imagine that research is difficult in this area as most of the people end up dead, as did the man above. I think that is what baffles me about these situations so much; we are built to preserve ourselves yet our minds allow major mistakes like this, how?

They do that in China all the time, it saves looking for an exit. A friend of mine had this experience with a taxi on a visit there.
