So what do you think? What is the goal with his programs and are they working? Or is it just snuff-tv?

That and Oprah, all crap. Self-congratulatory mental masturbation. Telling themselves how well they understand the human condition, getting in touch with themselves and being cheered on by the crowd, while there are twenty million people in poverty just outside their million dollar mansions, and their country is going to war. They're all pathetic inbred crap-stains in the toilet-bowl of life.

Aha, so it was the cocoa abstinence talking?
I like Oprah, but you are right that their care for humanity rhymes very badly with their own material wealth.
But don't you think that these programs can help people who might never have come in contact with psychology before, or even the concept of selfawareness? It's like therapy-light for the masses.

Getting any kind of help or self-improvement from such shows, such people, is like learning classical literature from the abbreviated versions on the backs of breakfast cereal boxes. Written by morons and used as advertising, and it may or may not have anything to do with what it claims to be about.

Guest: "Then my doggy died..."
Crowd: "Awwwww..."
Oprah/Dr Phil: "Hmm. Well, that's awful. I think we can all understand that."
Crowd: "Yaaaaaay!"
Guest: "Then I started listening to country and western music..."
Oprah/Dr Phil: "And how did that make you feel?"
Guest: "Like my fifth husband left, and took my thirteen bastard kids with him. And my dog."
Crowd: *gasp*
Oprah/Dr Phil: *Nods stupidly, as though she/he has experienced the same*
Guest: *breaks down crying*
Oprah/Dr Phil: "There there." *hugs*
Crowd: "Awwww. Oprah, you're so great. Can I buy your books now and give you millions of dollars that won't help your guest at all?"

Dr. Phillip McGraw, #1 New York Times best selling author and the Oprah Winfrey show's resident expert on human behavior is clearly one of the world's most recognized experts in the strategy and management of life.

Life Strategies: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters, Dr. McGraw's first book, was a runaway #1 New York Times best seller that rocked the self-help industry to its core with hard-hitting, "Tell it like it is" clarity and truth.

Relationship Rescue: A Seven-Step Strategy For Reconnecting With Your Partner is even more incisive and courageous in blowing up the myths of relationship counseling and management that have been pushed on the American public for the last several decades.

Drawing on his twenty-plus years experience in psychology and human functioning, this street smart professional meets people where they are, dealing with real issues arising in the real world rather than the touchy-feely fantasy relationships people cannot relate to. Written with humor, clarity and scorching reality, Relationship Rescue will revolutionize the country's approach to the management of marriage and relationships.

Dr. McGraw also provides strategic guidance and planning for the world's leading companies when they find themselves in the litigation arena. Fortune 500 companies the world over, rely on Dr. McGraw's counsel through Courtroom Sciences, Inc., the company he co-founded. CSI is the world's leading litigation consulting firm.

In addition to his books, television work and litigation consulting, Dr. McGraw has also trained thousands and thousands of people in effective life skills seminars, attended by participants from throughout the English speaking world. Additionally, he is one of the world's most sought after public speakers.

As a professional psychologist, he has published numerous scholarly articles, and has practiced in the fields of clinical psychology and behavioral medicine throughout his career. Relationship Rescue: A Seven-Step Strategy for Reconnecting With Your Partner is his second book.

I saw dr. phil for the 1st time last week. I stayed at home from work to take care of my sick wife. Anyway it wasn't so bad. Not nearly as bad as oprah at least...that show is revolting.

At least phil had the balls to tell women they were being delusional and stupid.

Still pretty worthless tv show...but its better than oprah.

Why would you even care enough to hate this guy so much? I mean, did he go out with your sister or something?? :)

Dr. Phil was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa, and then finished his degree at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. Later, he earned his doctorate in psychology at the University of North Texas.

off his website. University of North Texas? never heard of that one. i'll have to check to make sure it's real....;)

Well, I personally would call Dr Phil a street-smart psychiatrist, and there is something to be said for that. He does tell it like it is,
but I have to wonder what his success rate really is. Anecdotally it has been said that he does get god results, but such imprecise statements don't re-assure me all that much.

Oprah on the other hand offers sympathy to her guests and not much else of any substance. Sometimes she calls in real consellors to work with these people, but again I have to wonder if she really ever solves anybody's problems. Of course her guests get their 15 minutes of fame, fwiw, and to some degree her presentations raise awareness of some problems. So, I would argue that there is some net gain(but not much).

I've often asked other women who were admitted Oprah junkies just why they watch her, and what is it that makes them turn her on. The most common answer I'd hear was that "Oprah really cares". < fortuna making gagging sounds>. After watching her myself, I don't see it, she seems cold and withdrawn to me.

But, it seems that she has indeed fooled the masses and has become #1 in revenue among the talk show hosts. You 've got to give her credit for that, in general people THINK she cares, and well, she rakes it in.

At one time I used to respect Montel Williams, but then he started inviting that Sylvia Brown character I have no respect for him at all. I also honestly believe that Sylvia has actually somewhere along the way of her con game deluded herself into thinking she's real. But it's sad when I began to realize just how many gullible people really believe she has psychic abilities.

Now, you've got to love Jerry Springer. Jerry is the definitive trash talk show who invites to his forum the dregs of society. He knows it, accepts it, has fun with it and he goes with it !!!

But, what we have to remember is that the reality of the situation is that these shows are all about ratings, sponsors and revenue. And the more crackpot the guests, the more people who watch, which boosts rating and sells advertizing space.

Oh well ?

No, dude. Adam is very correct. These people serve no purpose except to rot people's lives as they sit on thier couches watching other people's problems.

They dont give a shit about real issues like the fucking people in Sudan. Oprah needs to focus her attention on the dying people and not her big ass. She devotes too much time to writhing, insignificant fools who cant see beyond thier provincial scope of life. Everyone one who actually goes to be be on the set of that show is a worthless pile of rat shit.

She is America at it's worst. There is no show that better defines the worthlessness of American than day-time talk shows.

Gosh darn funny. I want to do a study about people like you - their humor is so clever. If you don't mind adam: What do you do for a living?

Some people think that just because I'm a dork, that I am a loser. Let me tell you: That is a coincidence.
