A 22-year-old woman was wounded when a handgun that had been hidden inside an oven discharged when she opened the door, police said.

Colsaun Bailey, the 17-year-old alleged owner of the gun, was arrested, though police said they did not believe he fired the weapon, The Journal News reported Wednesday.

"We are operating on the assumption that nobody picked up the gun and fired it," police Capt. John McCoy told the newspaper.

Police said Bailey put two handguns in a bag then placed it inside the oven, which someone later turned on. When the woman opened the oven door to see why smoke was coming from it, one of the guns discharged, striking her, police said.

One bullet hit her in the forearm, hip and thigh, authorities said. Police said her wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.

Bailey and another man took her to the hospital and told officials she had been hurt by a glass exploding in the oven, police said. But officials thought the injuries looked like bullet wounds and called police.

Bailey was arraigned on assault and weapons charges and ordered held without bail.

A Yonkers firearm training officer said the Monday night mishap was plausible.

"We've had weapons that were in fires and the gun exploded," Chris Wargocki told The Journal News. "The gun can discharge or blow up from heat."

That's stupid...
First, what is the connection between Baily and that 22 year old woman? Did he have a reason to kill her, if he really did?
And it's not so difficult checking if this is the way it happened... The gun will have marks on it, if it was indeed in the oven... And the gun manufacturer can test to see if the gun really does discharge bullets when inside a hot place... There are very easy ways to check what happened....

And it also brings the thought.... Why would a 17 year old person have a gun? Why aren't there limitations? The stupidity of the law...

Bullets are propelled by gunpowder (as I'm sure you know) which is normally set off when the hammer strikes the primer which heats the gunpowder to the point of combustion. Leave a bullet in a hot enough oven and eventually the gunpowder or primer will go off simply because of the heat.
