Recently it seems that the Scam artists have got on a whole new band wagon, The Domain registeration scam.
What the Scam artists do is they utilise ways of finding out when a persons domain name is coming up for expiry. Then they send them a letter from their own company that sells domain names.
The letter mentions how "the domain name is getting near it's expiry date", and that they "won't send any more letters warning you of it expiring". Sometimes they even go into details of what can happen if you let your domain name expire.
However if your clever enough to notice the prices they put forwards for ensuring you get your domain and stopping it expire is more than three times the normal cost for a domain.
Simply the point here is if they catch you out, they then control your domain name and can squeeze you over and over again.
So if you have a domain name, Make sure the agent you use has an agreement with you to re-purchase the domain before it fully expires. Since they will actually have control over this factor, since which the domain is with your agent, it's located to their DNS records, which means if someone wants to use a different agent, it has to be shifted to their DNS records (Which costs the administration charges).
Also don't get caught out by the conmen, report them to the company you purchased the domain from.
