I just created a site, http://shwam.cjb.net , tell me what you think about it.

Its dedicated to:
Random bullcrap
Friends
and Games

Not fully finished, and the images for forums banner off a little.

Its a bit difficult on the eyes. To be honest, I think most visitors will hit the back button right away.

Try going for a nice, clean html or shtml website, and it should turn out great. postnuke might be overkill.

Alternative would be to have a clear HTML page link rigged that points to a page that doesn't have the postnuke equation.

what about now? i changed the site layout
changed colors and got user registration up, also fixed the forums
anyone know if its possible to make a file direct to shwam.cjb.net from that webpage?

For someone who knows phpnuke: how can i make my own link to a website within phpnuke? such as, me created a new website within this one.

For instance, i want to make a link that says GAMES, and then they click it and the games page will show up.... basically the same as if u press DOWNLOADS or WEBLINKS, only i get to design what it says

I used to have the same interest in content management systems as you, but now I'm back to the more traditional and simple ways of doing things. They might not be as easy to learn, but they're 1000x better. I promise. They're also faster, and much better looking once you know what you're doing.

It still looks kind of unprofessional... But better than the last..

I don't know what to think of it.

I don't know how successful you want it to be, but it seems to lack an identity.

But I can't be really too critical, because my own spuriousmonkey and bunny site aren't that popular either.

I get many more hits on a dog site I host for a friend each day.

Due to me feeling sorry for your Spuriousmonkey, I'm going to drop a few bot readible anchors into my sneaky "Robots must read files".

If you want to increase your popularity spurious, you need to share your links with other websites. (The searchengines still have preportion to defining your "weight" but the amount of links on other pages that the search engine spiders)

This of course goes for all websites.

I went to check out your site. Did you know that something funny happens with your 'top-index' in Opera?

Here is the picture:

http://www.*******************/pics/chatsoba_spuriousmonkey.gif

It looks ok in IE of course.

Stryder

Admittedly I haven't debugged the site in other browsers, mainly because I was still deciding how I wanted it to look. (Currently I'm undecided about it).

Anyhow, I will have to check it eventually for better website development, along with mozilla.

[Btw, the actual problem is just that I never assigned any width to the table entries in the layout, so thats where the problem is]

spuriousmonkey

I guess it is not such a serious problem since not that many people use Opera anyway.

My old spuriousmonkey site also used tables (now the frontpage is made with photoshop and imageready) and it looked always ok in Opera, but I never got it to look how I wanted it to look in Netscape and IE. That's when I decided to do a complete revamp, which cost me countless hours to do.

Currently I am still semi-happy about the style. I might get the itchy feeling again at one point and change it radically again.

Well, since I'm quite a deisgn/programming beginner, I'm impressed by your site, fubar. :)

I quite like it. In fact, it's inspired me to continue with my website (which I stopped for no reason a few weeks ago).

Kudos to you my friend.

Thank you. This is my first site that has an actual database with users and things.... also my first site hosted by me=D ... it took around 6 days in all to get where i am now, and for the person who said it has no meaning, im going to make it on military and civ. weapons, and also making it on random bullcrap i want to talk about... mostly its a place for ANYONE to post in the forums... maybe some of u guys can go register and post around in the forums =D

It took a hell of a long time to load (I am at school, they have a t1 for like 150 comps). If the people visiting have 56k modems, watch out.

The site actually seems to be down now...at least it is for me.

caffeine_fubar

Yes, the site went down for a few hours due to MySQL Problems. It is all back up and running, and i took down the child watch to speed up load time. It increased the load time by a ton. I still left on the Security Threat block up though. Added a Military Weapons page, check it out if you want. Its on the left PAGE MENU block. Not much to it, but i plan on adding more later.

hmm...looks ok, but a bit dark. You might want to consider lightening it up. Also, this is just a personal issue, but I'm not really a big fan of using images in page design (odd huh?)...but that's more because I'm nothing of an artist....

On another note, I think the header and footer images for menu items are a bit too bright for the page. I think using images with intensity similar to the ones in the navbar across the top (and below the header) would be a better choice. And the Arcane Disciples image (header graphic) probably could be touched up...and see if you're able to get it to better fade to black near the middle edges :)

Those are my suggestions...obviously heh

cool... if i were experienced in anything of those possibly, i may change them, but i think right now ill go to a lighter theme for awhile, and see if it increases loading time and stuff

Your site is offline again...

I wanted to check it out again to see the changes.

maybe later.

ps (because I bothered to post something and might as well use the space). I already used 2 Gb bandwidth this month. That is a record for me. This is mainly due because I was hosting lots of dog pictures for a friend. They were all about 800x600 in size, jpg format. My bandwidth went away so fast that I actually resorted to resizing all the pictures to 640x480. This actually makes a huge difference for the size of the file. More than I expected. Now I am quite comfortable below my daily limit again.

Yeah, my site was down today, i took it offline for as long as i was at school, and it all got screwed up. Its up yet AGAIN! Hopefully everything will work NOW! I will leave it up. Also had to bring it down because of Halo:CE!

Sorry...it is down for me again.

I think the most important thing about a website is that it should be up all the time.

I personally wouldn't revisit a new site twice. For a site I regularly visit it doesn't really matter. I'm a bit more patient then.

Bring it down to play Halo? Use a netmonitor tool or something (assuming the bandwith is needed for the game).

Ok thats it, i am sick of this whole downtime crap. I am at school, so i have no control over who turns the server off while im away, or who shuts down the computer or if my internet goes out, im screwed. (Its a home/family comp) so....
Does any know where i can get a FREE website with MySql and php support? Thanks

Does it look good?

I'm thinking about changing the look of my website.

old version (http://old.*******************)

new version (http://www.*******************/)

any opinions?

Stryder

Well when I first looked I thought "no", but then I turned my contrast up (since it was down) and admittedly they look clearer and show the evolution of your artwork, however I wouldn't completely dispose of what you have already drawn, there must be some way of keeping it Archived?

In other words, yep it's cool :D

spuriousmonkey
05-11-04, 02:18 PM
I don't know when you looked but I updated the test version a minute ago...

That is the version with the circle.

I forgot that I had the obligatory forum....

I kind of like it. I might change the colour scheme a bit though...It should be easier to change things now, since the whole thing is basically an illustrator file with many layers. Each layer can be manipulated separately with ease.

Still not sure about the colours.

caffeine_fubar

Go with newer =D

I put the old style front page on a separate subdomain:

old style (http://old.*******************/index.html)

I don't have the old secondary pages there though, because they already have changed over the time. I have cut out intermediary pages some time ago. Hence I am not going to be bothered with that.

And then I remembered that this is actually not the very first spuriousmonkey page. That one I had on geocities.

I put that one under another subdomain. If you are interested in how spuriousmonkey has evolved look at the following link (warning: some links are dead, mainly the ones containing animated gifs. I didn't repair them yet)

old spuriousmonkey geocities site (http://old2.*******************/index.html)
