View Full Version : Does great thinking require leisure time? Why? 09-27-07, 02:02 PM Will places like France with a 35 hour work week beat out the U.S. which makes it's workers endure longer hours? Don't you think better if given time to think? draqon 09-27-07, 02:06 PM who will be given a grant that we will think once given time of leisure? Why? 09-27-07, 02:09 PM Can you rephrase your question? I don't understand it. draqon 09-27-07, 02:12 PM Can you rephrase your question? I don't understand it. Why would the people who would be given time for leisure use it to think and not just spent it as waste. Why? 09-27-07, 02:14 PM Well, most probably would waste their time. However, what about the few who would spend their time thinking, but don't, because they don't have the leisure time? draqon 09-27-07, 02:23 PM Well, most probably would waste their time. However, what about the few who would spend their time thinking, but don't, because they don't have the leisure time? ...they would die. Everyone needs leisure time one way or another for biological clock reset. Why? 09-27-07, 02:25 PM Huh? Die? What are you talking about? draqon 09-27-07, 02:26 PM Huh? Die? What are you talking about? no rest...death in 3 days Why? 09-27-07, 02:31 PM True. I guess we all do get leisure time. But, don't you think more leisure time is conducive to intellectual endeavors? draqon 09-27-07, 02:33 PM True. I guess we all do get leisure time. But, don't you think more leisure time is conducive to intellectual endeavors? not unless the society also instigates an efficient robust mechanism for success in work. leisure is not enough...some other factors need to be changed as well. shichimenshyo 09-27-07, 02:35 PM True. I guess we all do get leisure time. But, don't you think more leisure time is conducive to intellectual endeavors? It depends on how a person uses their leasure time, if in your free time you rail lines of coke and watch tv, I would say that you are much less likely to partake in some type of intellectual endeavors, then say someone who works a ton but in their free time they read books on quantum theory. cosmictraveler 09-27-07, 02:41 PM Does great thinking require leisure time? No. Why? 09-27-07, 02:41 PM I'm saying on average, wouldn't more leisure time be more conducive to greater thinking? Sure, the guy spending time watching t.v. isn't going to do much, but what about the guy who would be reading books on quantum theory but for the time constraints of the working class? shichimenshyo 09-27-07, 02:44 PM It could help you, but only if at your work you didnt partake in anything intellectual, and in your freetime you did. Why? 09-27-07, 02:48 PM But, at work, you are thinking for your employer's benefit. This constrains the scope of thinking. Cortex_Colossus 09-27-07, 03:48 PM Will places like France with a 35 hour work week beat out the U.S. which makes it's workers endure longer hours? Don't you think better if given time to think? I agree that one requires time to think. But thinking should only be done while being occupied. Idle hands are the devil's tools. Why? 09-27-07, 03:51 PM But why would thinkers be idle? Aren't idle hands only the devil's tools for people who aren't going to be bothered thinking to hard? shichimenshyo 09-27-07, 04:05 PM But, at work, you are thinking for your employer's benefit. This constrains the scope of thinking. who says that the works best interest inst also your own Oli 09-27-07, 04:09 PM I agree that one requires time to think. But thinking should only be done while being occupied. Idle hands are the devil's tools. How about occupied by thinking? Dunn11x 09-27-07, 05:42 PM no rest...death in 3 days I thought it was 5 days, where you start to hallucinate and are close to death. I stayed awake for almost three days before (2 ~1/2) and didn't feel like I was gonna die. Dunn11x 09-27-07, 05:43 PM Thats how some of those crazy paintings were made. They would stay awake for 4 days and see crap and then paint it. shichimenshyo 09-27-07, 06:17 PM I thought it was 5 days, where you start to hallucinate and are close to death. I stayed awake for almost three days before (2 ~1/2) and didn't feel like I was gonna die. I have been up for almost 4 days straight it was nuts Dunn11x 09-27-07, 06:18 PM I bet, how did you do it/what was the situation? shichimenshyo 09-27-07, 06:21 PM I bet, how did you do it/what was the situation? well I did hallucinate but that may have been a result of over use of a certain drug, but after two days the visual effects of the drug wore off and I was unable to sleep because it was still messing with my brain, then after about day 3 I started hearing things..then about 6 hours before I passed out I was getting visual hallucinations as well. All in all it was a kind of neat experience Dunn11x 09-27-07, 06:23 PM let me guess....speed?! But that doesn't make you hallucinate, right? shichimenshyo 09-27-07, 06:24 PM let me guess....speed?! hahah no good ol lysergic acid diethylamide Dunn11x 09-27-07, 06:27 PM See you should have painted what you saw; maybe you would have been a renowned artist after you pass away. shichimenshyo 09-27-07, 06:28 PM See you should have painted what you saw; maybe you would have been a renowned artist after you pass away. I drew it actually, but its not that good Dunn11x 09-27-07, 06:29 PM I drew it actually, but its not that good lol, I can only imagine... Don't you think better if given time to think?People who want to think can simply eliminate TV - then they will think. For those who don't want to think can sit in front of the TV. Klippymitch 09-27-07, 07:05 PM People who want to think can simply eliminate TV - then they will think. For those who don't want to think can sit in front of the TV. Yes. TV is killer unless your high then your brain can think while it watches tv. I really think the people that run the government do not want it's citizens to think for themselves because that would be bad for them. It would mean less power. LSD was made illegal because of this. LSD was pinpointed by the government to be a problem for them during the Vietnam war, because the people who took this drug. Actually got the other people together(who probably also did psychedelics) and spoke out against the government. They protested against the war. Who wants to be the one who said to be running the country wrong? Do you want to be told your doing your job wrong? Fortunately for them they have the power to make whatever they want illegal. You can never be wrong when you have all the power right? Klippymitch 09-27-07, 07:12 PM People who want to think can simply eliminate TV - then they will think. For those who don't want to think can sit in front of the TV. Also tv is getting dumbed down thanks to capitalism. This allows for monopoly to happen. Ford basically owns the discovery channel and now we have cool shows like dirty jobs and etc. Occasionally they'll do something that is actually entertaining and teaches you about the world like how discovery channel use to be like. Blue Planet was amazing to watch. Another example of a station is MTV. Every show is an advertisement and everything is fake. The whole station is one big advertisement meant to reflect what is meant to be cool and trick kids and teenagers into buying their products. We pay for cable but what we're actually getting is advertisements. Yes I just love to pay for over priced shit. Dunn11x 09-27-07, 07:18 PM Yes, but lets not bash TV totally...there are game consoles! Klippymitch 09-27-07, 07:24 PM I thought it was 5 days, where you start to hallucinate and are close to death. I stayed awake for almost three days before (2 ~1/2) and didn't feel like I was gonna die. Actually it takes months to die from sleep deprivation. There's actually a rare medical disorder where the patient with the disorder cannot sleep no matter what and they die from sleep deprivation. I think it takes 3? 6? 9? months. I forget but it was really surprising. Dunn11x 09-27-07, 07:47 PM Huh, I don't exactly remember where I heard it from, as in which school or grade, but I did here that after 5 days you could die in school a while back. Dunn11x 09-27-07, 07:48 PM Actually it takes months to die from sleep deprivation. There's actually a rare medical disorder where the patient with the disorder cannot sleep no matter what and they die from sleep deprivation. I think it takes 3? 6? 9? months. I forget but it was really surprising. Are you sure it was totally deprived. Maybe they just can't stay asleep and it feels like they didn't get any sleep while laying bed, but, lets say, they still got about `.30-1hr of sleep. I think if you stay up and don't attempt to sleep you die in 5 days. cosmictraveler 09-28-07, 05:44 AM Will places like France with a 35 hour work week beat out the U.S. which makes it's workers endure longer hours? Don't you think better if given time to think? You think "better" when you're more educated, travel more and listen to others opinions as well. Michael 09-29-07, 09:35 PM defiantly the grade of News reporting is much higher in AU and ENG compared with the USA. In the USA it's a pony ride and dance show to get Americans maintain the 3 second attention span and get the news bite swallowed. Got it drives me crazy watching US News. That's discounting PBS which is great stuff :) |
