View Full Version : Does Sciforums=Global Village?
TruthSeeker 07-26-05, 10:02 PM I've been noticing how people fight here and how they behave towards each other... I wonder... how close is sciforums to be a mini-world? How similar sciforums is compared to the actual world?
Just observe when people talk. All the different ideologies....
...the madness...
...the doomsday prophets...
...the crazy-non-sense-religious people ("sheeple", as my wife says)...
...the egocentric philosophers...
...the egocentric scientists...
...the terrorists...
Isn't it so similar to the actual world?
I wonder what experiments can be done with this simple realization...

TruthSeeker 07-26-05, 11:06 PM Just you, you mean....
Well it's not like we're roleplaying different personas online just to post on some message board, so of course ideologies here will be like the real world.
Any "normal" people posting today?
How about abby normal? :p

TruthSeeker 07-27-05, 02:25 AM Well, not just ideologies- behaviours as well.
A good chunk of the world doesn't have internet and is hidden away from cameras... so I wouldn't know.
Starthane Xyzth 07-27-05, 03:29 AM I suppose that any sufficiently large, random sample of people will inevitably reflect the personal and ideological diversity of the human race as a whole. Surely, even in the poorest countries, enough people these days do have internet access to make their influence count.
I'm not completely sure that the sciforums make up an actual random sample. In fact, the name 'sciforums' should probably give a pretty nice hint as to whom it attracts.
cosmictraveler 07-27-05, 07:46 AM I would think that the internet is its own little world in which we can be people we may not really be in reality. Many people are "posers" and one can really never tell if they are just trolling or flaming to start a fight or get peoples attention. So if you think that the internets world as a little like reality then you might have a point to a certain degree.

I see flakes and fakes all the time in real life that either try to fit in with different crowds, or people that try and pick fights because they're having a testoterine overload, or drama queens that like to bitch and fight because that's how they are. Yep yep, the internet shares a lot of similitarity with real life. ;)

TruthSeeker 07-28-05, 06:27 PM Yes, your observation is quite accurate. Sciforums is not a random sample. But it might be big enough to give some degree of accuracy.
certified psycho 07-29-05, 12:13 AM JUst like everybody else in the world everybody here has thier own view on the world should be.
Starthane Xyzth 07-29-05, 01:24 AM In fact, the name 'sciforums' should probably give a pretty nice hint as to whom it attracts.
There's far more here than just science, though... and some members seem to post mostly in the Cesspool, Free Thoughts etc. Not particularly intelligent discourse, and certainly not scientific.
I'm still saying the people whom sciforums attracts disproportionately represents the population as a whole (whatever population that may be). If it's the population of planet earth, every third person should be Chinese or Indian.
There are a lot of atheists here. Lots more than the real world.
Starthane Xyzth 07-29-05, 01:36 AM Could there be any forum which equally attracts all types, nationalities and outlooks?
TruthSeeker 07-29-05, 03:01 PM We could make one. Let's call it "WorldForums".... ;)
TruthSeeker 07-29-05, 03:01 PM The problem is- how could we attract everyone?
The problem is- how could we attract everyone?
free beer (and good European one)
TruthSeeker 07-29-05, 04:25 PM What about people who don't like beer? They wouldn't be attracted, and that wouldn't be a random sample...
Those would be very few very boring people not worth having a party with. ;)
TruthSeeker 07-29-05, 04:39 PM That's not the point. The point is the experiment. Everything in the name of science, Avatar...
What use of science if it isn't a bit fun? :D (grins)
Don't let the experiment eat you.
TruthSeeker 07-29-05, 05:37 PM That's why I never experiment with genetics...
So.. tell me a bit more about your child to be born.. *evil laughter*
TruthSeeker 07-29-05, 05:47 PM Hey! Fuck off! You silly...! :p
Maybe you should call him (if it's a he) Hannibal *very evil grin*
Actually it would be very symbolic (as mythology) that the child kills its' father
p.s. sorry for the offtopic

Hannibal killed his father?
I thought that was Oedipus....

There's no excuse! You are banned! Mwhuahuahuahuahua.....
There's a thread where you can post that, btw....

Yes. Thanks. I'm normal. Don't listen to Mr. A. He's a little obsessed. People that like to flame have hostility problems that reflect their own troubles emotional state.
I voted no. Sciforums is in no way any indication of the real world.
If I took a sample of the real world, well over 80% of the sample would be living in destitution that is nowhere near the standard of most people that are able to post on a forum, much less have an internet connection, much less know anything about the internet, much less know anything about a computer.
TruthSeeker 07-29-05, 10:27 PM Well... maybe. But as I said before, there are many kinds of people here that reflects those people in the real world... ;)
lixluke 07-29-05, 10:38 PM Where?
Hannibal killed his father?
I thought that was Oedipus....
No, those are two seperate sentences.
Hannibal as in the movie "Silence of the Lambs"
And Oedipus is far from the only example.
