View Full Version : Does Canada deserve a slice of the pie in Iraq?
15ofthe19 12-18-03, 03:34 PM It's nice to have fair-weather friends like Canada. Reminds me of the friend that always shows up when you're buying the pizza and beer, but when you need help moving he's busy re-arranging his sock drawer.

Fraggle Rocker 12-18-03, 04:09 PM It's the friend who watches you make an asshole of yourself over and over and over again and finally tells you that if you're going to continue to make an asshole of yourself that you'll have to do it by yourself.
When you finally realize that you've been an asshole and you start being nice to your friend again, it's the closest an asshole ever comes to a real apology. If you continue to not be nice to your friend, then you're a really BIG asshole.
It's your choice.
Canada did the best thing for the Iraqi ppl...nothing, the French, Germans, Russians, etc did as well. The worst that has had happened in modern Iraq seems to be an unending isreali-esqe occupation, and terrorism from both sides. I hope Canada gets nothing, we don't want it. That is blood money we would rather like to stay away from. So in Canada's case I will be sad if we do get a contract. In the case of France, Germany, Russia...that's a totally different issue. They have over $12 billion of Iraq's debt, and they won't budge on that debt if the US doesn't budge on these contracts. As we have seen the no bid contract ideals of the US administration of late have gone awry, for instance the Halliburton overcharging. $18.5 billion for re-construction is a lot of money, and these countries aren't going to let this one pass by. To make a issue for the American public, would America would like to pay $18 billion for little work, of $ 18 billion for more work. With foreign competition (real competition) Americans will get more for their money. If anyone here disagrees with that, then they disagree with the basic premise of capitalism. Unlike American companies, those companies have experience in Iraq, and a major plus... they aren't American. What strikes me as Rosie put it in her hyperbole of a article as the hypocrisy is staggering. Is that Iraqi reconstruction, is in charge of the Americans. ;)
15ofthe19 12-18-03, 04:25 PM How can you say American companies have no experience in Iraq?
If it weren't for the expertise of firms like Boots & Coots, the oil well fires from '91 would still be burning. Why even make that statement? You obviously know it's false?
More experiance then European firms in dealing with the Iraqi's one on one? Pre-war,in peaceful circumstance? I don't think so...
P.S also the fires of 1991 were in Kuwait, not in Iraq. So you deserve this.
15ofthe19 12-18-03, 04:32 PM I didn't realize you were referring to the French, Germans and Russians violating U.N. sanctions and selling illegal commodities to Saddam. ;)
Man your such a waste of time... no not even the US also broke the sanctions with Haliburton, and Cheney knew. The largest country to trade with Iraq under Saddam u know who that was? Mr.Saddam would burn his own oil wells. LOL!
sweet Pentax 12-18-03, 04:44 PM great news ( in differnt ways )

Abdelasis el Hakim , the actual president of the iraqi goverment , said that "We decided to regard the door open to all states and all companies" , "no exception is made"
fuck off , mr bush , we get those damn contracts :D
ps : itīs also great news because it shows that the goverment is no american puppet in the moment ; otherwise they would have done what bush wanted ....
i wish the iraqis could take their luck really in their own hands

illegal ? hey , us-forces reached bagdad very fast - because of the nice AUTOBAHN we built !!! ;)
donīt complain about what we sold to them
I am happy that the concil is taking control of this American mess. But remember they are puppets to Bremer, and Chalabi, who are big suckers for those Americans dollars. But I guess Americans are against capitalism. :(
sweet Pentax 12-18-03, 05:09 PM yeah , i guess i was just too euphoric
:m:
otheadp 12-19-03, 03:54 PM Abdelasis el Hakim, the actual president of the iraqi goverment
Abdelaziz al-Hakim is not the president of the Iraqi gov't. he is the leader of Iraq's Shiites. well, not anymore... he's been assassinated today or yesterday.
but, back to topic, 15ofthe19
your analogy is absolutely correct. Canada doesn't deserve shit in Iraq (this coming from a Canadian) in principle... but in reality, sure i'd like Canadian companies to get some contracts so the economy here will improve.
guthrie 12-19-03, 05:05 PM Of course, if you isolate the thread title, what it is basically says is "we're going to save all the money for ourselves, and sod any idea of free markets, national sovereignty of Iraq, etc etc."
Hey, does cnada have any expertise in any area that is needed in Iraq?
And why go by nationality anyhow, transnationals dont care about countries, except insofar as how to suborn them to their economic interests. The Uk is a good example. When the USA slides furtehr down, most of them will up sticks and move to china, not caring about anything in the USA.
Note: this is a medium term prediction, on the order of a decade or two.
