So I accidently hit on one of the tracks form the movie Hero while trying to get to U2 and I was reminded why the violin fascinates me. The guitar is my instrument of practice but the violin always mesmerized me and does what no words can.
Oh what sweet heart aching it brings........such sanguine, heart wrenching beauty comes from those 4 strings....so because of that I am always in search of new pieces performed on this magical instrument.
Well this place is cultured enough so can you guys recommend any sad, morose, pieces performed on the violin....performed solely on the violin preffered.
I don't care what time period it is from. I have found some beautiful pieces made solely for videogames so my interest is vast in the instrument.
Got any pain to share?

Oh my god! I've finally found someone that has experienced the very thing I experience on a regular basis! Ya've helped me finally describe this feeling . . . Thanks so much, sargentlard!
Anyway . . . Sorry, but I don't have my hands around anything composed on a violin.

Oh totally dude....
I plan on picking it up myself. I found a violin suit for $300 and I simply must have it. Recently a master violinist opened up his own website giving free violin lessons online.

Violins are fretless, yes? I've always been amazed by the skill that must be required to place your fingers so precisely on such a small fingerboard.
As to moving violing pieces. God. I can hear a few in my head but I can't think of a single name.
I'm sure someone here can help you. Wait 'til Rosa gets on. She knows a lot about classical music.
I have been summoned.

Sad and morose pieces performed on the violin? Personally, don't know any "sad and morose" pieces, this is the domain of early 20th century classical music, which I don't know much of. I take Schönberg (the f*cker!) has tortured the violin too, as he did the piano.
Anyway, for the older ones, you can look up Paganini's short solo pieces for the violin.
Otherwise, here are some lovely pieces for the violin and orchestra:
Peter Tchaikovsky: Violin concerto no. 1, op. 35 in D
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Violin concerto, op. 64 in e minor
Max Bruch: Violin concerto no. 1, op. 26 in g minor
J.S. Bach: Violin concertos BWV 1041 and 1042
And the Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano:
No. 5 in F major, op. 24 (Spring)
No. 2 in A major, op. 12 no. 2
No. 9 in A major, op. 47 (Kreutzer)

Moonlight Sonata or the Piano Sonata No. 14 (Beethoven) is a very beautiful piano piece to listen to.

Well, aside from Rosa Magika's great choices, may I add:
Albinoni: 12 Concertos Opus 9 (specially the Concerto no. 2 in D minor)
Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor, Opus 64
If you enjoy melancholic violin, you can't go wrong with the Largo "The Rain" of Vivaldi's "Winter" (The Four Seasons)
Oh yeah, on another level you can also check out Kansas' "Dust in the Wind".
