I found an article printed in 2002 stating that there are exceptions to the rule that the mitochondria are passed on only through the mother. Has anyone heard more about this?

Yes, I recall reading that there is sometimes a small amount of paternal mitochondrial inheritance. I don't remember where and I have no reference immediately at hand.
