View Full Version : Distilled Water
Seeker01 12-17-02, 08:09 PM I just bought a distiller to make distilled water -- pure H2O water.
Our normal tap water contains dissolved inorganic mineral that can not be filtered out by whatever filter system.
They can cause cancer etc.
Distilled water gives you good health and slow down aging.
It is worthy to invest in it!
I drink mineral water and bottled non sparkling water.
If you drank tap water in Latvia....well....I wouldn't advice it if you want to live a bit longer:p
reformedtopunk 12-17-02, 09:32 PM I live in Maine and have a well. Yummy fresh well water. tis good. I don't trust mineral water....you never know what they are putting in it and it tastes funny....
Avatar, pardon my stupidity, but Latvia was created after WWI right? just curious.
yes- the 18th of November 1918
I live in Maine and have a well. Yummy fresh well water. tis good. I don't trust mineral water....you never know what they are putting in it and it tastes funny.... lol - I buy good mineral water. Actually it's 3 times more expensive than a bottle of beer. ESSENTUKI mineral water from Southern Russia
Essentuki is the most famous drinking balneological resort in the Caucasian Mineral Waters region. Hydrochloric alkaline mineral waters "Essentuki-4" and "Essentuki-17" brought deserved world fame to it. The resort by right holds the leading place in the country for its effective cure of alimentary canal and liver diseasesand metabolism disorders.
Asguard 12-17-02, 09:46 PM u know something
melb tap water is better for u than filered water
the goverment spends millions to both protect the catchments and to put floride into it to protect ur teeth
On Radioactive Waves 12-17-02, 11:41 PM Drinking too much flurinated water can have an adverse effect.
Asguard 12-17-02, 11:44 PM thats crap
there is not enough to do that
u have to eat tooth paste for it to matter
and it has SO improved the quality of dental health here
NightFall 12-17-02, 11:53 PM well water... -shivers-.. thats what ive had ever ysince i moved two years ago. god its disgusting..... so i drink only dasani now. unless im at a friends house and they have city water, then ill drink that ofcourse.
On Radioactive Waves 12-18-02, 12:00 AM Thats not crap. Thats what will become of your teeth if it happens. I saw a picture of a kid who had many fluride treatments, and in addition drank only flurinated water.
Moderation in everything, including moderation.
NightFall 12-18-02, 12:10 AM -sniffs- my insurance doesn't cover flouride treatments after the age of 18. i just had my last one last week. it was raspberry.. ill never forget it. -pouts-
spuriousmonkey 12-18-02, 02:57 AM it might be better to drink some 'challenged' water instead of distilled water. Especially for children. Some research point out that too much hygiene could be the cause of increase in allergies in our modern clean society...
for instance..some studies advice you to get 2 fairly large not so clean dogs when you have children (yes, 2 was better than 1).
other studies say other things...who can you believe other than me? nobody
reformedtopunk 12-18-02, 06:19 AM reminds me of george Carlin. he said he never gets sick EVER because when he was a child he swam in the dirty nasty hudson river In NYC and made his Immune system PRACTICE! Even though good ol' georgie was making a funny, i've heard the same as spuriousmonkey, that your immune system only works well if it gets a little use every now and then. makes me wonder about the boy in the bubble...

Bah, maybe YOUR well water is gross. Mine is awesome;). Its the other way around here i guess, cause the city water in ellsworth is really nasty. REALLY REALLY nasty...as in...."ewwww! that was Really nasty!".
 I need more sleep...:

where do you get a machine that turns tap water into distlled
i buy about 6 to 9 gallons of distilled in a bottle each week.
On Radioactive Waves 12-18-02, 06:29 PM the "machine" is a still (spelling?) and you can easily make one.
i agree, distilled water is the shit! tastes delicious

Dasani is the nastiest bottled water on the planet. It takes so metallic that it makes me cringe. It's loaded with sodium, magnesium, and potassium salts. It tastes like licking a penny. I'd rather have any other bottled water.

Very odd... most people think distilled water tastes horrible. You need some mineral content to soften it up and make it isotonic.
- Warren
On Radioactive Waves 12-18-02, 06:41 PM no way! i like the taste. its so clean. almost like its just the absence of saliva.
if you want some corona water, I'll send you a bottle!
6 of our 11 wells had high levels or perchlorate recently :)
pumpkinsaren'torange 12-18-02, 07:14 PM people who consume distilled water exclusively, eventually develop multiple mineral deficiencies. the ideal h20 for the human is slightly alkaline(distilled is acidic) and contains trace minerals, also, distilled water can leech important minerals out of the body's own "storage-shed".
On Radioactive Waves 12-18-02, 07:27 PM how is it acidic? it could be either acidic, basic or neutral.
if its ditilled and de-ionized, then it must be neutral. how do you conclude its acidic?
pumpkinsaren'torange 12-18-02, 07:42 PM i agree with the good doctor Mercola: Distilled water is an active absorber and when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it acidic. The more distilled water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes.
Distilled water by definition has a pH of 7 -- it is neutral.
pumpkins is right about mineral leaching, however. Your body's fluids are filled with sodium, chlorine, potassium, and magnesium ions, all of which are necessary for life. When you drink large amounts of distilled water, you're diluting your own electrolytes. This is possibly harmful when you drink a lot.
It's much more dangerous when you exercise heavily, and drink distilled water afterwards. The double-whammy of losing lots of electrolytes to sweat, followed by diluting what's left with hypotonic water, is very bad for you.
The ideal water for your body is isotonic -- with the same concentration of dissolved ions as your body naturally achieves.

Carbonic acid is very weak.
When stored in a food-grade container without any air, distilled water remains pH 7. It takes a long time of exposure to air to absorb any significant quantity of CO2.

pumpkinsaren'torange 12-18-02, 07:52 PM yeah...and by then it'd probably be evaporated...so....there ya go..

On Radioactive Waves 12-18-02, 08:20 PM I think by nature, distilled water is close to 7. If you want to be sure, its got to also be de-ionized.
Voodoo Child 12-18-02, 08:38 PM Flouride in water is the best thing to happen since internet porn. Or not, since it happened before it, but you get the idea. It has a profound, positive effect on the regions that have it.
If you have too much flouride at an early age(before the enamel has formed), however, it can mottle your teeth. This is called flourosis(sp.?) It is merely cosmetic, however, and shouldn't happen if flouride is decently managed.

same here.
its the only water i like.
whenever i drink any other kind of water, i immediatly get a funny taste as if it were contaminated.
i dont know how bad it can b.
i drink it all day long and excersise, and im still alive.
On Radioactive Waves 12-18-02, 10:22 PM I'm sure the majority of people have no problem getting enough sodium, our crappy processed food is loaded with it.

That's what makes me laugh. People get in a fuss about their water, right doen to the brand and all, but not buying a double cheesburger, or swilling down vodka come to that. Isn't this bottled water thing trendy more than anything else? And what's all this nonsense about carrying a bottle EVERYWHERE, like they might get seriously dehydrated any second, like it's the only water for miles?
I think it's silly.
lixluke 12-19-02, 07:39 AM i carry a bottle everywhere so i can drink some good water when i get thirsty.
NightFall 12-20-02, 10:48 AM cool skill:
if you read the back of the bottle it says, "adds a negligable amount of salt", and the sodium is still at zero. if it did contain alot of salt, i wouldn' be able to drink it.

I'd rather have any other bottled water. you really think so? go to the corner store and pick up a botgle of "Deja Blue". its reaaalllll cheap. and it makes your teeth feel gritty.. i think there more lime in tht water than what comes out of my faucet at home. :( but really, try it. i think you'll find something you like even less than the big D. :p
Edit: Potassium chloride is salt? hmm.. learn something new everyday...

Yep... "salt" used colloquially means "sodium chloride." In chemical circles, though, any alkali or rare earth atom ionically bonded with a halogen is referred to as a "salt."

NightFall 12-20-02, 12:21 PM -laughs-.. yeah.. ill remember that tomorow. lol.
how can distilled water affect the body's pH?
what about buffer solutions in our system?

The buffer solutions aren't free -- our body has to invest work in making the constant supply of bicarbonate.

y do they put salt in it?
dasani is bottled by Coca Cola. Thats enough reason not to drink it.The water distiller is a great idea. Soon we will have to give this much more thought. It is very common in the Caribe and Central Am. to have plastic containers (30-50gallons) mounted in trees to collect rain water. If coupled with a distillation process this could work well in states with a large average rainfall.
Drinking distilled water can be a healthy alternative, however such practice WILL flush minerals out of your body and you'll have to replace them with nutritional supplements (e.g. a good multi-vitamin with minerals.)

 I have drank distilled water because of necessity while traveling. . . . Unless you are boiling the water too violently and causing carryover, therefore defeating the whole purpose behind distilling... it will not (imho) taste delicious!!
True distilled water tastes terrible to most people , simply because it has no taste. People are not used to that.
lixluke 12-26-02, 10:17 PM i spent 2 days with my fam
all they had was the zephyr hills water.
it tasted horrible but i drank it because it was the only bottled water there.
i dont know if drinking distilled for so long has messed up my taste because everybody else seemed fine with the zephyr hills.
a few years ago, i tried to make koolaid with bottled water that wasnt distilled.
it tasted real bad so i thought it was contaminated.
then i tried again on another bottle, and it was the same so i threw it out.
does anybody else here taste the difference between distilled and regular bottled water?
NightFall 12-27-02, 05:06 PM wsn't till two months ago that i knew it wa safe to drink. lol. so i havn't tasted i yet. but next time i put together a wedding cake, ill let you know. lol.
pumpkinsaren'torange 12-28-02, 10:12 AM ha ha...we are all such over-analytical (yet highly-intelligent) nerds...look at us.. we are the only people who would get into such a lenghty discussion about an initial simple statement about distilled h20. heeeeeeee heeeeeeeee ho. oh, man i love this place. :D
