I thout about soakin such papers (stacks 1/2 to 1 inch thick such as canceled checks) in water... but what chemical coud be added to water that woud speed up the process... ive considered bleach... is ther somptin beter than that which woudnt put off dangerous fumes.???

Another option might be to simply shred the paper, and then put it in a sauce pan and boil/simmer it on a low heat for a couple of hours, effectively treating the paper the same way that you treat fruits or vegetables when you're making a soup or a jam (which is essentially what you're doing, making paper soup.

or, alternatively, if you can get your hands on some concentrated enough sulfuric acid, that has the ability to reduce it to a slushy black carbonized mess.

Buy a paper shredder. Shred them. Then burn the shreds. Then compost the ashes with your kitchen scraps.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composting

Then eat the vegetables you grow from them. Then poop.

Then flush.

Should be hard to reassemble them.

I have about a hundred pounds to get rid of so even a perty heavy dudy shreader woud take a lot of time an work (20 sheets at a time)... an whare i live its agans the law to open-burn such stuff... i coud take it to a shredder bidness but i woud like to destroy the stuff myself "if reasonibly feasible"... consintrated sulfuric acid souns a bit dangerous :fright:... an Doreen... you'r idea is safe... well thout out... an i agree that reassembly woud be dificult... lol... but after i posted my queston i thout about "Rid-X"... the stuff for septic tanks which is suposed to help decompose "paper".!!!

But you know what... i thank i will do an esperiment (on 3 small batches) usin plane water... bleach/water an Rid-X/water... an see which will turn a 1 inch stack of canceled checks into mush the quickest.!!!

I will report the results.!!!

I hypothize that the Rid-X/water will be the quickest follered by the bleach/water an then the plane/water.!!!

If you're worried about chlorine, try one of the oxygen based alternatives.

Somebody in there should eat it.

I was about to say the exact same thing a minute ago!

The one problem is that it may stink - but later it will turn to good planting soil.

You could nitrate some of the cellulose in the paper, which would cause it to disappear in a flash if lit on fire (rather than burning slowly and producing smoke+ash). It might be a bit of a fire hazard though.

The US DoD has a standard procedure for destroying sensitive documents when out in the field:
Shred the document into smalls pieces (usually using a security shredder / chipper)
Dig a pit, no less than 3' deep and 4' wide, and place the shreds within the pit
Burn the shreads/chips in a fire using flamable liquid (gasoline, diesel, kerosene), allowing the material to burn until converted totally to ash
Add water to the ashes in the pit and mix until it forms a muddy paste
Refill the pit with the dirt removed to make the pit and return it to the appearance of the local surrounding

That should do it if you're looking to totally destroy evidence with a strong degree of overkill.

Just burn them! Besides no one can really understand your writing anyways.

Also, as of yet there is no known way to destroy your documents from time travelers trying to read them, sorry... wait I got it! unless you travel back in time to before the documents were created and prevented their creation!

Below is 1 of 3 jars wit a 1 inch stack of checks inside... the checks are held down by 6 oz. of wate (pennys) inside a red plastic lid... i plan to add the plane-water... bleach-water an Rid-X-water tomorow when the esperiment will begn.!!!

Ok man I got this: you get a shredder, than get some meat, buy yourself a live stock of pig, 10 or so...have them in your backyard, mix the shredded paper with meat and make two pigs eat it, than after pigs get fat butcher them and feed them to two other pigs, and after those get fat butcher them and feed them to two other pigs, and the next two same way...than butcher the last two pigs and make hot dogs out of them, sell to random people.

Voila, information scatter all over the city and than all over a county, nation, the world.

Shred it, Pulp it with glue and then make something out of it, paper mache (http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=qMt&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&resnum=0&q=paper+mache&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=BtmPS-C4LY7KjAfd4d3FDw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CB8QsAQwAw) style.

(note: doesn't work so well with money, as money tends to have cotton fibre and the inks used rarely [except in rare, misheat treated cases] wash out. )
