Despite two decades of expanding democracy around the world, many countries have fallen back into authoritarian rule or are facing increasing economic and social hardship, warns a new study released today by the United Nations Development Programme.

Is democracy on the way out?

Democracy is only expanding and will likely never be on the way out. Democracy's only enemy maybe its lazy patrons who become too acustomed to the luxury of it and may lose it because of their unwillingness to participate in the system.
