Ok, so it's the first Metallica album I've been able to sit through in ...about 16 years.

Rick Ruben produced it... It shows, that guy's like king Midas, everything he touches turns to gold.

Anyway, it's not.."And justice for all", but a good alternative to the tripe they were putting out with Bob Suck.

Anyone heard it yet?

No. Looking forward though.

Theres some good music, but Rubin's clipped production is a total disaster.

Hetfield's voice doesnt have enough reverb.

Lars sounds like hes pounding on empty suitcases.

And Kirk...poor Kirk. The guitar solos sound like random noodling that has little meaningful connection with the context.

By contrast, check out the stunning sound production Opeth gets on their recordings.

To me there is two Metallica albums nowdays, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets, I have those albums in vinyl and CD :)
In Justice the overall sound is awful, no bass and sounds dry as an chalkboard.
I think Metallica lost something very important with Burton gone, RIP.
Actually they wanted him so bad to join the band that other members of Metallica moved to San Fransisco because Cliff wasnt willing to move out of there, they saw him playing in the band called Trauma and decided that he would be the man for the bass.

It's mastered too loud. I doubt Rubin had anything to do with that, save letting it ride through to the public. Which makes me wonder if it wasn't an attempt at "raw" or just the desire for the CD to much louder than anything else in someone'
s collection.

Hetfield's voice doesnt have enough reverb. I agree,in combination with the music,it would certainly sound more like classic Metallica with the vocals washed out with reverb.
But I think the writing is better than it's been.

Lars sounds like hes pounding on empty suitcases.
As always. But again, the content is better than it's been.

And Kirk...poor Kirk. The guitar solos sound like random noodling that has little meaningful connection with the context. As always. Again a step up from playing the same solo for the last 4 albums. WHAwwhawwhawwhawhawhawh. They let the little dweeb go nuts yet kept him away from the rhythm tracks.

Well, sure. But he/they were never the punk driven, drunken rejects that made Metallica so loved in the old days. The energy is completely different and can't be compared, IMO.

Sounds like your biggest problem was with the production. As I get older, I can look past that more and more.
Though, now that I've heard the thing 4 or 5 times, I doubt I'll return to it often.

Kirk composes better rhythm than lead...the Sandman riff is his.

I suspect he needs someone like Bob Rock to force him to play something relevant to the song...otherwise its just pure wankery.

I agree totally, although I do have a soft spot for 'Kill 'em All', but I agree, 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets' were definitely their Apex.

'Justice for All' was laboured, and I can't listen to it. There's just not one good song, riff, or enjoyable part to that album.

I've no interest in Metallica any more. 'Some Kind of Monster' was a joke, Metallica Inc, trying to get some EMO coin or what?

-Yeah, KillŽem All at least is honest straight to the point no nonsense album, kinda punkish in the way, whiplash, seek&destroy and other songs are/was great live songs, I saw Metallica at Helsinki in Justice tour was it -88, great kick and after that I never even considered too see them again, to me it was the peak of that band, downhill since. Black album at first seemed okay but I never couldnt listen enter sandman when I listened the album, such a cheesy sing along blues-heavy song, the chorus is just something silly...eeeeeeeeeenter niiiiiiiiiiight, blaaaah. :D

I like that album, probably the last one I have liked, but yeah, 'Enter Sandman' got played to death. It's a shame when that happens.

-Yeah, that happens when you want to push the band to number one in the charts, I bet Metallica couldnt do that without that song blocking the airwaves.
Likewise, the album was the last one that I was fan about, not so much now days.

This is going a bit off topic but this is what Burton was about, he dominates in this song, one of my favorites, Call Of Ktulu, what an epic. He was the guy whom did teach the other guys about harmonies and music theory in general. Turn up the bass ! :D

I got a copy of Death Magnetic and I think it's better than their recent work. My problem with it is the vocals. James used to have a more raw screaming voice, but now he sings more clean and melodically.

'Justice for All' was laboured, and I can't listen to it. There's just not one good song, riff, or enjoyable part to that album.I disagree. Every song on it is good. There are some amazing solos and riffs. My only problem with the album is the horrible production quality. I think Blackened is my all-time favorite Metallica song. Harvester of Sorrow comes close.

My order of preference for their albums:
Ride the Lightning
And Justice For All
Master of Puppets
Kill Em All
Black Album
Load
Reload
Saint Anger

I'm not sure yet where Death Magnetic fits in because I've only listened to it once. It's probably right there with Load (which might seem unfair because a lot of people hate Load, but I think I like Load more than most people. I have a lot of good memories attached to it).
