Ok. the 360 has been giving me the 3 quarter full Red Ring of Death.

For those that buy the 360 for Halo 3. Make sure you maintain it, and It is worth it.

Has anyone here found a way to reduce hardware failures, or know what causes them ?

There are various pages on the net for dealing with the 3 quarter rings, most point at the initial XBOX's having problems with the Thermal paste for the GPU. However there can be many other reasons for the occurances that go beyond that.

My second XBOX actually had a failure that didn't bring up the red lights, instead I popped a disc in and suddenly there was a tremendous noise as the disc bounced back and forth in the drive.

It turned out a metal component on the spindle which is magnetic had come loose and stuck to the top of the drive case meaning the disc was no longer tracking correctly. I'm lucky I didn't damage my disc but I had to pull the box apart, open up the Hitatchi drive in there and use some Glue to stick the metal piece back where it belonged.

It's still got issues here and there (Notibly not picking Games up as anything but DVD's) however it was the only way to deal with it other than buying a new box. (I won't buy 'Yet another one'. If it completely fails now, then thats it... no more XBOX for me)

Obviously when you open up the back, what you should do is get some Hair pins, make sure the ends are flat enough to fit in the small case lock slots at the back. You will need an extra set of hands for it and some decent light if you want to keep the case in one piece. (You can buy the actual case keys online or with replacement cases)

Basically when you unclick the case, the base of the XBOX comes away, so you can undo screws that hold the top down. So don't try forcing the top off.

from what i have read online from some xbox owners that is debateable the newest generation of 360 is supposed to have a failure rate under 10% but still much higher than ps3 or wii

Most of the games that appeal to me are American made and 360 exclusive games, hence why I go for the 360 :)

Three red lights in mainly a failure due to heat. I've had my Xbox for 2 years and it's failed on my 2, every December. Anyway just make sure to keep the area around your Xbox clean from dust and make sure it has enough air to circulate the heat away from the box itself. Also I know a couple of third party vendors were making intercoolers that plugged into the back and helped cool the machine, but I read somewhere, I forget now where, that the power they were drawing was causing more heat then they were helping with. So stay away from those.

On the other hand MS has gotten really good at replacing the Xbox if it fails with three red lights. I sent mine off to get fix on Dec 3rd, and UPS had a slip for me to pick it up on the 10th.

If something comes out on PC that means its not exclusive? I thought exclusive pertained to just the consoles. After all no one talks about PC exclusive do they? Like crysis?

no but it is dishonest to say something is exclusive to the 360 when it is also out for the pc

No, the pc is not considered a console.

Same deal. I got my Xbox the first day it came out and had no problems until this December when it died. I sent it in, and had a new one within a couple weeks.

For the most part as someones mentioned it can be heat related, namely the more someone uses their box, the more likely it will suffer a failure. I don't think they ran a prototype constantly for a year to test to see if it would fail or not.

I know BOTH mine went through some serious game hours before developing faults, bother with Hitachi Drives. However it's not only Hitachi that suffers failures, a friend of mine had a problem so we had to open his up, but he had a completely different company drive in there. So obviously the problems were different (Although he has a young kid that likes to jam things in it)

Most people I know however have traded in their XBOX before it fails to Second hand stores, and got themselves an Elite. The extra cost covers a warrantee and as mentioned the hardware faults have supposedly been dealt with, plus they have an HDMI connection for High Definition which XBOX prior to August 2007 didn't have.

Mass Effect was enough to get me to buy my 360, and there's supposed to be two more of them plus DLC by the end of the console's lifespan. Halo 3 was just icing on the cake.
