Suddenly a new program showed up on my computer called DOSbox. I disn't install it, so I took a look. It is some kind of emulator, so I thought maybe the Windows update (I have XP) put it there.
At this point I can't decide if it is needed or not, but when I clicked on uninstall, the shortcut was missing, so I am very suspicious of it.

Any idea? Do I need it? If not, how to get ride of it???

Windows XP update didn't put it there.

It sounds suspicious to me.

Dosbox is a legitamate program, but I'm not sure what is on your computer. The real dosbox is a download you need to install, it should never mysteriously 'appear' on your machine.

The real dosbox is an extremely usefull dos environment emulator for many versions of windows and linux. I use it to run old dos games in both win98 and linux. It's free and works incredibly well, very little hassle.

Here's the real dosbox:

The best part is that it is not showing up on the list of Add/Remove programs, so I have to do some kind of trick to remove it...

OK, I think simply throwing it into the Recycle bin solved the problem. I never clicked on the Install icon, the Uninstall and Readme were a broken links, the computer couldn't (didn't want to) find those. Fingers crossed...

ok i'll take a crack at this.

did you try moving it to recycle bin?
did you search your system and thats all it found?
you may not see anything in add\remove programs anyway.

OK, I did a search and I have found one more .exe of it, throw it to the Recycle Bin...

looks like problem solved, the program was never executed...

On the monitor icon of the installer.exe there was a horse. This could have been a funny way of saying this is a trojan... :)

That icon sounds like the real dosbox icon. A computer system with a horse on the monitor, and a cd disk and a box. What's wierd is it suddenly appearing on your machine. Anyone other than yourself use your computer? Someone who maybe wanted to play a dos game?

Nobody else downloads on the computer anything. I thought maybe this is a new virus and not very well known, or maybe it wasn't a virus at all. Although I don't get why the Uninstall .exe didn't work...

Strange. Well, if it was the authentic dosbox I wouldn't worry too much. IIRC, it dosen't mess with the registry or anything. It's designed to be a very safe environment for dos gaming on modern hardware and os's. If it's set up properly, no matter how badly your dos app bombs it can't hurt your os, because the dos app dosen't have access to most of your hd. Oh well, sounds like you've got it off your system now so it doesn't matter.
