    Over 20 000 dead now...

People say that the Burmese junta knew that it was coming and did nothing.

The cynic in me says its true, as the amount of aid money is staggering.
and none is likely to get to the needy.

Well the U.S government knew Katrina would come, knew the levee would break but didn't do anything either and they supposedly had the resources to do so. The Junta couldn't have done much under the circumstances to alleviate the catastroph

Yea but what else is new. Aid money is always siphoned off but I think you will be suprised at how much of the money does get to where its needed. The last thing the Junta wants is enough instability and chaos to allow for an uprising. With so much loss its fertile ground for public resentment and discontent. The Junta has always been a control freak government. They will funnel aid resources to areas that reinforces its power.

And just think, Americans fought to help Burma become "free" during the second world war but look what it turned into. I'll bet the people who died there are very upset at what has happened to the government there.

Very sad, what's happening there. People dieing and suffering is secondary to politics. -- ashamed to be part of human race.

The US is "appaled" that the burmesse wont alow US officals onto bermesse soil. I wonder why that is, could it be that US aid comes with strings or because they are concerned that some of those "aid workers" might actually work for the CIA?

i was being slightly sarcastic in my replie because i have seen to many occasions where US aid agencies (excepting the red cross of course) have been involved in spy related activities

    Aid missions are usually welcomed?

The only time I felt disgusted at such a refusal was when the Russians refused help with a submarine crisis that we could have helped with. All submariners died, including a cadet competition winner.

Well considering past interference by the U.S in South East Asia they are right to be cautious

i agree, i think you missunderstood what i ment by being sarcastic. It was the question mark that was sarcasium rather than the inital statement.

I compleatly agree that they have justfication to be concerned especially after those aid workers were acused of working for inteligence agencies. Though they really should let the red cross in because they are compleatly netrual in everything. Even to work in there internal groups (like internal disaster relief and there blood bank) you cant be in a political group or a goverment worker (which is why i didnt join because im training to work for the goverment)

Well they're isolationists & control freaks. The Junta has had a tough year and the people of Myanmar has had it even tougher. Its the Junta's way of making sure they have total control over a situation which I am sure they haven't even estimated the total damage. They will probably rely on their closest neighbors, I'm sure China, Thailand and India will all do their part. By ignoring the West even in a time of need is the ultimate show of autonomy

i do have to wonder why they havent alowed thailand to send millatry aid, or china to be honest. They need helicopters to reach these area's and either of those countries could offer them

This is a tragic example of how much some nations fear and distrust the US even though the US intentions may be purely "honorable" in this case. Even the UN has lost credibility. I hope with the new admin next year, perception & attitude towards the US will start to change.

Yes, it's all the U.S.'s fault, the Myanmar junta has seized aid intended for a multitude of victims, and diverted it to the Military and Government, and is keeping relief workers out.

They let in enough aid to take care of their own ass's and screw the people.

    S.A.M. India supports this government.
