Even if Mugabe doesn't remain in power, I doubt there will be any reasonable change in Zimbabwe, if they don't beg for the British to return and administer them.
African countries, with some exceptions, are primitive and they don't know how to govern themselves.

However there is hope that the next leader won't be as batshit crazy and incompetent as Mugabe.

People get ready: Mugabe loses in Zimbabwe?

As Charles Mudede explains at Slog:

Or, as the BBC puts it:

Zimbabweans have been studying the first results of their elections on Saturday. (via BBC News)

We're several hours away from the anticipated release of election results. People get ready; this one could get ugly. And quickly.

at the risk of being to nieve some times it DOES take a few weeks before the results can be acuratly releaced if an election is close. Look at the seat of benolong (howard's former seat) in the recent federal election. It took about two weeks for it to become offical that he had lost and i seriously doubt there was any rigging involved in that

If he lost this is a GREAT day

Looks like there's no fool like an old fool.

Having driven the country that he "saved" from colonial oppression, to near ruin, now he wants to leave behind a civil war as well.

In a sense, the country is already at war with itself, because of his policies. He might have been a good rebel and guerilla leader, but he's bloody hopeless as a political leader.

Another African "big man", with no plans, except staying "big", no matter the cost.

I don't care what you say about his policies, the man makes a damn fine bottle of wine.

Great news. I wish Mugabe had been defeated long ago- my family would probably still have a farm there.

Here's hoping Tsvangirai will surpass Mandela in advancing Africa.

So here we go. It begins.

Any guesses on how bad this is going to get?

I suppose the question is: Are the people up to it?

Charles Mudede posted the following scan of The New York Times yesterday at Slog—

    —and notes,

Could be worse. Could be Argent's "Hold Your Head Up".

Just a note. The copy of the Mtukudzi song in my iTunes library is "Raki", and that seems to hold up as I look around the web. Either way, if, as Mudede fantasizes, that was the song playing on the radio in the picture, it would mean that they have better radio in Zimbabwe then in Seattle.

Well, not necessarily. We still have the two NPR stations and the legend of its own time, KEXP. And that station from Bellevue is trying hard, too.

But that's all beside the point. Anyway, one wonders when beleaguered Zimbabweans will get up and how much they will set on fire. Or, rather, how many of them Mugabe's thugs will set on fire. Let's hope they get out of this one without too much burning and shooting and smashing and hurting.

Mugabe's up to more bloody theatrics. He's not in touch with reality, and doesn't care to be. It all comes down to whether the military keeps fearing and backing a dismissable madman.

Mugabe's goal - returning stolen land to its original owners - was entirely just and noble. Unfortunately the ends do not justify the means, and the means he chose to use were barbaric.

What original owners? As I've read it's mostly his own henchmen.
The commonly poor person lived in city slums, till they were all thrown out any way.

Yes, his cronies ended up getting most of it. And apparently they don't know much about farming. But certainly the goal of returning stolen land to its original owners was entirely just and noble. Maybe Mugabe meant to do that . . . maybe not.

A long time ago he was a liberator; a well loved revolutionary - until the lure of power corrupted him. He's now on what, his eighth presidential term?

Beware of revolutionaries bearing noble goals . . .

I always thought Mugabe was an asshole from the start, and he has been. I can't wait until he is a has-been.

Reminds me of that movie about Idi Amin - "The Last King of Scotland". When he came to power he was hailed as a hero. But towards the end of his reign he was hated.

And SUPRISE SUPRISE. It looks like China is wanting another Sudan situation in Zimbabwe.

A Chinese ship on its way to supply Mugabe with chinese weapons to kill the people who appose him has being caught in South Africa. However... Our authorities (surprise surprise) ... are doing nothing about it.

Less people died during Apartheid. How can the world allow this to happen? Oh wait... no oil.

All I know, as from a South African perspective... the world are racist hypocrites. Im so angry

You guys will sit at home with a nice meal, but me personally, I cant be a part of this hypocrisy any more. With my government now supporting the dictatorship in Zimbabwe I have decided to enroll in several more..... aggressive organizations to free the people of Zimbabwe and stop the chinese corruption rolling through Africa.

I cant believe this has being allowed to happen

While people buy little chinese toys, that money goes towards killing millions. This world is sick.
