View Full Version : Creative Forum Ideas?
wesmorris 05-23-04, 11:32 PM I don't mean to be serious, but i thought of an interesting idea once and wondered what would happen if it were tried.
What if thread starters were moderators for their own threads? or if you had a forum that did that, but the other forums were normal.
i realize this software probably wouldn't allow that, but what a trip. It might go horribly, but then again it might be pretty revealing.
*shrug*
Just thought I'd throw it out there.
CounslerCoffee 05-23-04, 11:35 PM If you want to see chaos and censoring; let the masses take control.
wesmorris 05-23-04, 11:36 PM that is exactly the idea.
wesmorris 05-23-04, 11:36 PM to each his own, literally. wow that might be a total freakshow.
CounslerCoffee 05-23-04, 11:40 PM I'd like to see the flame wars, but I'm not a supporter of this idea. It'd be a neat experiment in forum psychology. Who would edit and why? Who would delete and why? Why give people like Proud Muslim even more of a chance to spread their filth without any proper rebuttals?
Rappaccini 05-23-04, 11:41 PM How silly of me!
I did not credit RawThinkTank (http://sciforums.com/member.php?u=14419), http://sciforums.com/avatars/avatar14419_1.gif, for originally coming up with the idea!
Why not make each thread creator a backup moderator , kind of thread owner ?
http://sciforums.com/showthread.php?t=36183
I guess I just wasn't myself for a moment there!
wesmorris 05-23-04, 11:42 PM exactly, or WOULD he? could turn out he's a straight arrow. that's part of the draw to me, give them total power to see if it corrupts. and it's virtual, so no real harm and we still see character exposed!
edit:
i think it would be tough to implement on this software, but I don't really know the software, could be super easy.
regardless, I suppose I'm right about me echoiing someone else's post, but I hadn't seen it before i echoed it. i guess it's an obvious idea.
has anyone heard of it being tried?
Rappaccini 05-23-04, 11:44 PM Then again... this was a stupid idea.
Please, everyone, ignore all further posts from me (in this thread).
CounslerCoffee 05-23-04, 11:46 PM I doubt he's a straight arrow. Power does change people. If I lost my moderator status, I'd be a regular member and would be able to say what ever I wanted again. I'd be worse than what people claim I already am.
They say that when you're in a room by yourself, that that's like being invisible and that what you do would dictate what you would do when you’re invisible.
It’s an interesting idea… Perhaps we could do this on a free board off of sciforums? And invite everyone over? I’m not up for coding it, though.
wesmorris 05-23-04, 11:48 PM No no! Listen to me! Accept my shizophrenic fantasies of anarchy!!!!
I'm not sure how customizable the given software is. Could be a simple script depending on one's access to event triggers, etc. I'm not sure at all though whassup, as I've never seen the admin end of the software.
Rappaccini 05-23-04, 11:52 PM Scratch that... ignore all my posts, in all threads.
Coffee and Myself, that seems like a good idea. Too bad we're so lazy... I mean busy.
wesmorris 05-23-04, 11:55 PM Hey this is fucking cool. There's enough of me around that I don't have to even post anymore, yet I'll be posting all over the place.
I've finally installed an auto-pilot.
*thanks ganesha*
Hey look my schedule just freed up!
CounslerCoffee 05-23-04, 11:57 PM Why am I talking to myself?
Rappaccini 05-24-04, 12:00 AM Excuse me. What did I just ask?
Other posters, would you contribute already!?!?
This lack of input is really quite embarassing!
CounslerCoffee 05-24-04, 12:04 AM Especially when you're talking to yourself. Damn, I just did it again!
wesmorris 05-24-04, 12:05 AM Roflmao
Oh Shit I Crack Me Up!!!!!!!!!!
I feel like agent smith, er.. kind of.
CounslerCoffee 05-24-04, 12:08 AM I feel like Agent Smith too, Mr. Anderson. Err, Mr. Wesmorris.
Rappaccini 05-24-04, 12:09 AM G'night, fellow Agents.
May be gone for a while. Beata Europa, don't you know? I'll leave my avatar as it is, though. :D
Closet Philosopher 05-24-04, 10:11 AM Maybe some funky graphics (but not overdone) can work on this forum. Maybe we can vane logo-designing competitions. A little more blue in the colour scheme could spice up the forum.
I saw a forum than had a "game" forum where the people could play all of the game threads, word association, "Porn Name" (a popular one at the moment) andd all that stuff that doesn't have a place anywhere else (perhaps in the cesspool).
SkinWalker 05-24-04, 10:25 AM I'd like to see two things: a time limit on edits & a way to earn karma similar to the way /. works.
Time limits on edits would remove some of the vindictive tendancies that some people have to start a discussion that lasts for weeks even months, then, when it doesn't got the OP's way, a systematic edit/deletion of posts occurs, leaving only the opposing views with whatever quotes they've been able to get. It also leaves the option for someone to go back and edit a post to say something totally contrary to what was originally stated or drastically change the context of a post with even subtle edits. I think a day or two to fix spelling & grammer or to add new, relevant information is sufficient.
The karma option may not be possible (time limits is), but it would offer a way to reduce trolling, flames, etc. while giving some way to gauge the credibility of a member other than simply referring to their post count.
Just a couple of thoughts.
jadedflower 05-24-04, 11:04 AM Yes, I can see people adoring the idea of having Proud_Muslim moderate his own threads.
Logically Unsound 05-24-04, 11:21 AM nah, thatd be excellent, hey, can we have a section of the cesspool given to PM, but only for like 5 minutes before everyone gets pisse* off.
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 12:44 PM That´s something I would like to see :D
Logically Unsound 05-24-04, 12:55 PM not for too long i would guess. :)
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 12:59 PM But it would be a nice experience. I imagine a vast muslim ruled propaganda thread where every post that does no align with the opinion of PM would get deleted. It would be fun to watch how they post grand and colourful passages taken from scriptures at each other. After some time they will surely get bored because no one would care and take notice about them. :D
Logically Unsound 05-24-04, 01:01 PM thered be nothing in them except PM's rebuttals to posts that have been deleted by him. hed just look a fool, and be effectivley talking to himself.
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 01:26 PM Nah, people like stacy would also be able to post in there without getting deleted.
Alas there are rumors that PM and stacy are the same person :D
Just rumors, mind.
Logically Unsound 05-24-04, 01:36 PM who the *ell is stacy?
Dreamwalker 05-24-04, 01:46 PM Just some muslim user, you will most likely find posts in PM´s threads.
If you really care look here (http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?t=36485) for example.
Closet Philosopher 05-24-04, 08:01 PM I like the Karma idea. On other forums, it cuts down on useless crap that surfaces. THere are many ways to do that.
After thinking about it, individual moderating now sounds like a bad idea. I think there should be more active moderators though and there could be more than one mod per thread.
wesmorris 05-24-04, 08:39 PM How exactly does the karma thing work? Point us to an example?
SkinWalker 05-24-04, 11:06 PM http://slashdot.org/faq/com-mod.shtml#cm700
Slash dot uses karma as a means of moderation and credibility.... I'm not suggesting that sciforums adopt it exactly, but it seems that vBulletin has some built in "karma-like" qualities. I suspect that's what the little green square in the profile is related to.
The earlier version of vBulletin used to have a "rate this post" option that added some sort of points to the member. Perhaps the newer version has something similar but not activated.
ahh... it was just a rambling thought :)
Closet Philosopher 05-25-04, 06:49 PM http://forums.tabcrawler.com/
This forum has "quality points", so that if you put quality posts most of the time, people will know.
Dreamwalker 05-25-04, 06:53 PM I like that idea. Karma seems to be a nice system.
Arditezza 05-25-04, 07:05 PM I would like to see a Literature - Fiction and Literature - Non-Fiction forums to discuss books and the ideas within them. I read a tremendous amount and it would be nice to discuss my findings and opinions on those books with others.
Dreamwalker 05-25-04, 07:11 PM A forum about books? That would not be so bad either.
Now that you mention it, there are really not many books
discussed anywhere on this board.
I only saw some threads in Art and culture.
But then again there are many different kind of books,
about philosophy, science, history and so on.
Perhaps threads should be started in those
forums then.
But I think I would support a book section.
Arditezza 05-25-04, 07:43 PM It could actually be neat. We could choose a book to read, and then give people a few weeks to read it and then discuss it. Could even do science, history and philosophical texts. Like a summer reading list. I think it's worth a try.
Jeremirroer 06-26-05, 05:37 AM No this idea would not be practical at all.
Frank King 06-26-05, 05:51 AM i like books
