    Wow!
How can they tell if he is a nut job or a good christian? he did what the Bible said, he didn't hurt another person.
Wouldn't this be like locking up someone for homosexuality?

Idaho man sees 'mark of the beast," cuts off and microwaves hand

HAYDEN, Idaho — A man who believed he bore the "mark of the beast" amputated one of his hands, put it in a microwave and summoned authorities, Kootenai County sheriff's deputies say.

The man, in his mid-20s, was calm when deputies arrived at his home in this north Idaho town Saturday afternoon, and neither he nor the severed hand bore any noticeable tattoo or other mark, sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger.

The man, whose name was withheld, was in protective custody in the mental health unit of Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene, where he and the hand were taken by ambulance. Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Johnson would not say whether an attempt was made to reattach the hand, citing patient confidentiality restrictions.

"He put a tourniquet on his arm before, so he didn't bleed to death," Wolfinger said. " That kind of mental illness is just sad."

The New Testament Book of Revelation contains a passage in which an angel is quoted as saying, according to the New International Version of the Bible, "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, he, too, will drink the wine of God's fury."

Wolfinger said didn't know which hand was amputated.

Schizophrenics are very fond of religious imagery.

I was just getting to say that. One of my relatives works in a mental asylum and a lot of the schizophrenic patients are really religious fanatics. Not always christian though, use your imagination.

then why aren't they committed or diagnosed as such? I always think of the movie Harvey. He talked to the rabbit, thought it was real, went everywhere with him. How is that rabbit any different than god or a guardian angel?

Homosexuality was once considered a mental illness. Do you think a god belief should be?

I guess the implication being made here is that Atheists are not effected by mental disorders? Good luck proving that one.

    Numbers.

Remember that the statistical definition of normal has nothing to do with whether or not that normalcy reflects reality insofar as the idea of a couple billion people with the strongest share of political empowerment on the planet getting on their knees to ask favors of an invisible being who apparently blessed their conception and birth while seeing them delivered to life in a state It finds repugnant is "normal".

Seventy words or so. Not so long, all things considered.

If I went around talking to an imaginary person, people would at best take it as a joke, at worst ask me if I was on something. But people regularly go to church and do exactly that, and that is considered normal. Why?

    Matthew 5:30
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

so wasn't he just being a good Christian? I don't understand how they separate being a good chrisitan and doing what the Bible says from insanity.

Because, crazy people are so common. To be sane is the rare thing.

Most overtly crazy people don't even 'get committed'. They're left on the streets, or if they're lucky, in the care of their family. If we don't commit these people, then why would we commit those who are capable of caring for themselves?

Homosexuality is not an irrational belief.. there's no comparison.

Well, I can't argue with your highly logical axiom...
