View Full Version : Could this be a kidney stone?

I was playing simcity and drinking some rather old club soda (still good,) then suddenly, I felt this pain like someone had kicked me in the nuts. It went to my lower back, and extended up into what I thought were the gonads (or maybe ureters.) It lasted for maybe 2 minutes, subsiding as I lied down on the couch.

Then I searched google and found this:
http://my.webmd.com/hw/health_guide_atoz/hw7826.asp

So I drink plenty of water, but lately I've been eating a lot of fetta cheese and other dairy products...the only possible cause I can think of.

I just finished peeing, collected it in a bottle, and saw no traces of sand.

From your experiences, could this be a kidney stone? And relative to this incident, would it cause significant pain if I passed it without going to the doctor for some emergency medicine? (I don't like going unless I absolutely have to.) I remember learning about these a couple years ago and that they break up as they travel down to the bladder.

um, kidney stones take a while to pass, and they're really hard, cus its like the size of a pencil eraser, so see your doctor. maybe its a parasite. the best thing to do is drink lots of water so it keeps the calcium in suspension, so they don't clump. Then it separates. :m:

Might just be back pain. I get lower back pain on occasion. It can get so bad it makes you nauseous and light-headed. It seems to spread into the guts and surrounding areas, but I imagine that it's just a sympathetic reaction.

Or it could be something else. Who knows? I don't think you'd feel pains from kidney stones while just sitting there though.

Don't sound too much like renal calculi to me. It didn't hurt enough for long enough:) and you didn't mention nausea. Of course anything is possible but thats the best I can say from the other side of the planet.
For a more informed picture than the link you posted try this.

I can't help but wonder just how long you were sitting in that chair....

As for getting treatment.
If you insist on acting like a man ie: extreme pain is preferable to having a stranger look at your balls, then so be it but if the pain reoccurs see a doctor.

Good luck

Could have been a muscle spasm or cramp. Or an infection. Both will be painful. Kidney stones are usually very very painful and the pain usually lasts for much longer than 2 minutes. The pain has a tendency to be so bad that you end up with your head down a toilet and sometimes you may also feel as though you wish to empty your bowels. Check the colour of your urine to see if there are any traces of blood or if it's darker than normal, which could also be a sign of infection. That being said however...

So I drink plenty of water, but lately I've been eating a lot of fetta cheese and other dairy products...the only possible cause I can think of.
You could have kidney problems or you may in fact have a stone that may have moved or dislodged in your kidneys. Get it checked out just in case.

Ermm if you'd passed a kidney stone, you'd be in so much pain that walking would be difficult... 'significant pain' wouldn't even describe it. Especially if you're male. I've seen people pass out cold while passing a kidney stone, both male and female. If I were you, I'd go to the doctor to do a urine test as a minimum to rule out infection. And if it happens again, definitely go to the doctor for a checkup. Drink a lot of water, and try some cranberry juice or you could ask your pharmacist for some Ural or other form of urine alkaniser (however, these should be avoided if you have any traces of blood in your urine) as well, if it does happen again or it becomes painful to urinate, etc. And try to lay off the cheese for a while, just in case you actually do have kidney stones.

My mother once had a kidney stone: we both thought she was dying. I ended up calling 911.
The EMT's said that kidney stones account for something like 40% of their emergency calls, and my mom said that it was a close second in pain levels to giving birth (and she gave birth naturally).

Kidney stones come in all shapes and sizes. I have seen them the size of sand grains, up to the size of acorns. I don't think you will have one, they are a later life thing. Also kidney stones are according to a survey by doctors, the most painful thing to have. I think this could well be true. I work in an operating theatre and have seen some of the poor sods writhing in absolute agony before surgery. Besides the stones in your kidneys, you also get gall bladder stones. These are mainly made of cholresterol, but again are agony to suffer with. Go get yourself checked out - better safe than sorry, but i'd wager you've probably got something else ;)

I had something similar. Weird case. I used to be a 6 or 7 can of soda per day person. Never gave it much thought. Occasionally, I would get a pain in my lower back on the right side, kidney area. More spasmodic than real *pain*. Anyhoo, the pain would subside from the back, then it would show up again in the groin area, then it would go away then come back around the private dangly areas. Cycle would repeat. When I decided to stop drinking the sodas in order to help in my weight loss goals and began to drink lots of water, I noticed that the pain went away. Weeks of nothing but water and no pain. One day of backsliding and drinking a Mountain Dew, that afternoon the pain came back. After two more days of back to water only, no more pain.

Figured a mild case of very tiny stones causing renal colic. Perhaps being dehydrated from the multitude of carbonated beverages?

I limit my soda intake considerably these days.

..... FWIW

Nothing

Actually, I hardly ever drank soda. Though I used to drink A LOT of coffee, I've now quit in favour of 100% water.
