    You're paying for the machine...

I think my old allergist charged $900, but he was kind enough to give me a freebie b/c he knew I didn't have it.

do you got insurance . Cash Pay is usually cheaper than insurance . We cash people get a brake for paying cash . The paper work is way less and if you pay promptly big discounts can be given . That sounds like a lot but you would have to know what there overhead is before you snap decision it is to much for your area. Cost id related to overhead and if they are financed big the cost can be much higher . Local rent is a factor besides the machine .

Me one doctor discounted Me bill 20% for paying her in 3 months . The first payment was 1900 dollars and that was the biggest payment . That was the one she really wanted as it was paid in advance . Money talks bull shit walks

Wow, I went in to have my eye looked at and they asked if I wanted a CAT scan and it was free. Luckily I was living in Sydney at the time

I have heard that part of the reason official cash prices for medical procedures are so high is that Insurance companies demand to pay significantly less than the cash patients and to meet that demand the doctors/hospitals must raise the official cash price. Sometimes the doctors reduce the cash patient's price below the official cash price even if that puts them in violation of their insurance contracts.

I don't think that Insurance companies should be allowed to demand discounts below the cash price and I don't think think Walmart or Toys R US should be allowed to demand lower prices than their smaller competitors.

If the insurance companies only say we will not pay more than X dollars for Y procedure that would be OK but if the Insurance company is saying we will only pay 40% of the cash price to me that is a violation of the spirit of antitrust laws and free market competition.

Recently my mom had a "spell" where her heart was not beating properly. She spent 3 days in the hospital and the total cost was $32,000!!!! Our health care system is fucked. I think I may have heart problems myself...but there's no way in god's green earth that I will go in for examination for fear of the cost. I was layed off from my job, and with it, went my health insurance. Any medical expenses now come straight out of my pocket.

If Your portion was $109.00. Medicare covers 80% of the Medicare approved cost, the Medicare adjusted and approved cost should have been $545.00. There is another thing that could be involved in the difference, which is also connected to the clinic accepting Medicare direct payments. If Medicare in reviewing the claim decides that any part of the treatment was not covered, for the situation and the clinic did not inform you in advance, the clinic has to accept Medicare's disallowance of that portion of the charges.

Without seeing the Medicare statement it is hard to tell how any of this applies in your case. Just remember as long as you are seeing a provider that accepts Medicare direct payment they are bound by what Medicare says they should be paid not what they billed. And watch out for hospitals. If it can be done at a clinic, the cost will be far less.

If the clinic accepts Medicare direct payments they also have to accept the Medicare approved cost. That leaves you responsible for only 20% or the $109.00.

I ran into this a lot with my mothers medical bills. You are lucky it was a clinic instead of a hospital. Approved costs for the same procedure at a hospital are closer to the $8350.00 number and you would have had to pay 20% of that. They say it is because hospitals are required to also serve the uninsured.

It does really make you think about how much we are sometimes being over charged.

Many people are in totally different circumstances - so comparing what one has paid to another is an exercise in futility. Seriously. It's worse than comparing apples and oranges.

For example: I've had several CAT scans in the past 8 years. And between Medicare and my private insurance (which is part of my retirement package), I've not paid one single penny for any of them.

In addition to that, I've had two stents implanted which, once again, cost me nothing.

did i sound smug? i hope i did because thats what i intended. Any number of times i have argued that the US should bring in UHC of some discription (either goverment owned or goverment pays) only to be shut down because thats "evil socialisium" by you yanks. Its hard not to feel smug (as well as sad) when you lot now come here to complain about having to pay for what should be part of the national tax burden.

If i go to a hospital 1 of 2 things will happen, if im concious (and come in myself) i will go see a triage nurse who will clinically assess me, then i will step over to a receptionist who will take my details and ask me for my medicare number (if i dont have it see option 2). I will then be seen acording to clinical need, given all the tests, treatments ect that are needed and the only thing i will leave the hospital with is a letter to my GP to go into my pt records (NO BILL)

If i come in unconcious, imidiate catigory or in an ambulance then they will just get the medicare number later (and if i dont have it they will call my GP and get it from them). I will be checked, treated acording to clinical need and then leave again with no bill.

The only time i would see a bill is if i CHOSE to go to a private hospital which i wouldnt anyway because the public hospitals are the high catigory hospitals (ie where they difficult cases are seen and there for where the equiptment and experiance is).

Just out of curiosity, can you give us a link that shows precisely what each citizen pays in taxes to cover your government healthcare system?

you know that tax doesnt work that way, some people pay no tax and some people pay alot of tax which is the way it should be. I possibly could give you the total costs of the health care system, could probably find total costs as a percentage of tax but there IS no standed break down of how much each person pays in tax, thats just not possible. Even if i had that infomation (if i happened to work for the ATO) how exactly do you expect me to post it? Firstly it would be against the privacy act to releace what a specific person paid and secondly it would flood this server to post what EVERY one of the 21,874,900 people in Australia (2009) paid in tax

Surely you're bright enough to realize I didn't mean each individual by name! And I've already found that chart you posted - it's TOTALLY useless for what I'm looking for.

And I could also give you another list showing the taxes paid by every citizen based on their income level AND a list that shows how many people are in each of those brackets. Finally, I could give you a list of where practically every federal tax dollar collected in the U. S. is spent.

And don't try saying that it's all hidden from the general population because I'm not buying that excuse for one second. :bugeye:
