Tht1Gy! 12-24-07, 01:11 AM So one day I find this Sciforums thing and I find it engaging. First time any of these things struck me as worth the effort of typing.
Anyway, there's this guy I encounter early on who seems quite irreverent, occasionally blasphemous, and is funny as hell. In other words, my kinda guy.;)
It turns out he take snaps.
Photos.
Pitchuas'.
He must be a real tiny little guy tho. I mean, to be able to get that close to those bugs...;)
Seriously, tho: They are amazing!!! Just fucking amazing!!! You gotta check this site!
Many of you already know about this guy's work, but if not, go see, go see.

LOL, I thought this said "List of retarded articles" so I thought, "Oh, it really is his site" :D
VERY impressive Enmos. I wish I had your talent <green with envy>
Blessed be your art, the sword you wield rises high upon the crescent rim of the cyan sky
greenberg 12-24-07, 01:42 PM Enmos, thanks for posting those photos.
I especially like the one of the horse in the mist.
And the insects, too.
You must have a sharp eye!
Thanks guys, it's always good to know people like what you do :)

MacGyver1968 12-25-07, 07:34 AM Enmos' pics fucking rock! Rock like Eddie Van Halen on really good speed.
Enmos quick photo question. I was trying to take some images at last nights Christmas eve dinner with a digital camera. I was using a "night" setting without a flash, which was giving me the warm glow of light I wanted, but all my pics were shaky and unclear. Any suggestions? Maybe less coffee and a tripod...or a faster shutter setting?

If you truly want great pictures in dim light situations you need a DSLR with a lightning fast lens. Shooting in dim light situations is always difficult with a normal digital camera. In fact, I usually avoid it ;)
Not much bugs after dark any way eh ? lol
A tripod might help but keep in mind that if someone moves it will show in the picture due to the long shutter time. Only quick solution is to use flash I'm afraid.. or have everyone sit still while you take the photo.
Thanks Mac, you have a wonderful Christmas !! :)
MacGyver1968 12-25-07, 08:15 AM That makes a lot of sense..thanks. Merry Christmas!
spuriousmonkey 12-25-07, 08:27 AM oh god, that site sucks. Where are the crack whores and war amputees?

Orleander 12-25-07, 06:01 PM Do you sit and wait for those photos to come together or is it just luck? I just don't notice things like that. I've never slowed down enough to notice. :(

Actually they are all around. Once you get into it you see them everywhere :D
Of course I have a few fav spots, for the dragonflies for example.
Do you mean any pictures in particular ?
Orleander 12-25-07, 06:13 PM Just if you know its gonna be a full moon and a foggy night, so you plan to take pics. Or are you walking by the window, see the moon against a foggy background, go get the camera?
Just if you know its gonna be a full moon and a foggy night, so you plan to take pics. Or are you walking by the window, see the moon against a foggy background, go get the camera?
I don't do nights though :p
Actually, I plan most of my 'shoots'. After work I just go to one or some of my spots and see what's there. Sometimes I'll go find some new territory :)
I always take note of the weather of course in my decisions where to go. The foggy images for example, I saw it was particularly foggy, got in the car in drove to the spot I took the images. I knew the surroundings there, but there was some luck involved of course..
So.. I don't know.. a little bit of everything I suppose.

I use a Nikon Coolpix 8700.. an 'older' compact digital camera really.
So no extra lenses, only the fixed one ;)
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Nikon/nikon_cp8700.asp
- 8 mp
- 8x optical zoom
- 3 cm macro focus range
I never use a tripod, not much use with insects anyway.
Don't shoot at night either.. as my interest mainly lies with insects and other small critters :)
:bugeye:
Yea... :scratchin:
 lol

Orleander 12-29-07, 09:27 AM Smithsonian magazine is having an amateur photo contest (http://photocontest.smithsonianmag.com/v5/). Have you ever thought of entering it?

I thought about entering a couple of times.. but I never do..
I'm not good enough and I don't have the luxury of beautiful environments to photograph.
Enmos sure you can do it...your photos are beautiful...you just have to retouch them with photoshop
Enmos sure you can do it...your photos are beautiful...you just have to retouch them with photoshop
Yea.. but I won't.
I do minor contrast and color enhancements now, any more and it will become more of an artwork than photography.
This will either do or it won't.. anyway.. I'm not really that interested in any sort of recognition. It's a hobby.

Bullshit!!!!!! Let's have none of this self-effacing attitude, oh Lord.
Those bug photos are FUCKING AMAZING! And forget that photoshop crap. Just understand whatever parameters they require and send in a photo that meets them.
On this I have no doubt.
M' Lord. :D

Hobby? Hobby? No, my friend, what I saw was no mere hobby! It's just a vocation you've yet to figure out how to avail yourself of.
(If they shoot down your photo, we'll flame 'em :D)
Well, I'm proud of what I do but I'm also realistic enough to know that many, many others are better at it.
Tht1Gy! 12-30-07, 02:17 PM Enough of this self effacement!
As Rob Schnider sez-"You can do it."
Truly, there is this 'quality' in your pics I've never seen before, esp the bug photos... I don't know... It's as if the insects are posing for you, or something.
It's as if the insects are posing for you, or something.
lol many others say that :D
Tht1Gy! 12-30-07, 02:36 PM Well, then listen.
Dude.
I mean- Oh lord.
I do.
But that doesn't mean there arent any better photographers than me ;)

Maybe professional ones, but this contest is for amateurs.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

that's all I'm asking. Take a look at some of the past winners and you'll see that your pics are just as good, if not better. There are many many categories.
The Natural World, Americana, Altered Images, Travel, and People.

Right-click, save as ? ;)
It's the original, so you'll have to do the cropping yourself..

Like I said lots of contests require the images not to be published before. So that doesn't seem like a particularly good idea lol

Tht1Gy! 01-14-08, 02:28 PM "grrrr"? Hey, look, no offense was intended. I apologize if any was taken. I was just being silly.
Wales, huh? Cool! My paternal grandfather was from Wales. As an american my lineage is mish-mash, but for reasons that are unclear to me, I seem to identify with the Welsh component of my heritage, (I must confess tho, I know very little about Wales:( )

SnakeLord 02-02-08, 02:32 PM Anyway, usually you can't enter any images that already have been exposed to the public..
Enmos: Incorrect.
I enter dozens, if not hundreds, of photo competitions every year and I have yet to see one that doesn't allow an image that hasn't been posted on forums/other photo comps etc. They will however stipulate that the photo can't have been published - that means in actual book print on sale in a shop, not pasted on a forum or your own webspace.
If you're in England I can give you links to many photo comps. Let me know.

Hmm perhaps I'm wrong about that then, maybe I interpreted it the wrong way.
Anyway, I'm not in England.. I live in The Netherlands :)

Only Amsterdam ? I'm curious... what was so beautiful about it ?

Different culture, life, look, feel, I guess:shrug:. I was only there for three days before I flew to Sorrento, Italy; so I was unable to see most of the Netherlands. I just enjoy being away from usual life (which is very rare), so almost anywhere different seems beautiful to me.
Dont worry, it wasn't nessesarily the "De wallen" that appealed to me most.

LOL that's not what I meant. I'm just surprised that whenever people talk about a foreign country they have been to being beautiful, they refer to the marvels cities there.
I cannot understand why anybody would find them beautiful..
To me the beautiful of a country is directly related to the nature there.

I saw a little of the Netherlands outside of Amsterdam. Those windmills add a very scenic effect. I really could have stayed longer and gone to different places, but keep in mind that I was traveling with a lot of my realtives and in addition to that, I'm only 16. Since I had very little influence on where my relatives were going, I just made the most out of it. :o

Ok.. lol
The Netherlands has some nice places but there are lots and lots of countries that I think are more beautiful.. maybe it's because I grew up here and I don't see it anymore.
Btw. apologies for the ridiculous typo's in the last post, I guess I was tired at the time :o

synthesizer-patel 04-22-08, 03:22 PM These ones are quite fun - I took them with nothing more fancy than a phone camera pointed down the eyepiece of a microscope.
they are crab larvae - the first one is masked crab: Corystes cassivelaunus
and the second is a common shore crab Carcinus Maenas

Hehe, looks like he (she?) is looking into the camera. Don't you think he looks like Sir Patrick Moore?

Thanks ! It's def. a Byrrhidae sp.
Thanks for the push into the right direction.
You got be spot on though, but I like to verify it myself by investigating the other species :)
Do you make money from photography?
No.. I've been told by people to try something in that direction though. For now it's just a hobby :)
if people want to make money in photography they better take pictures of something totally exquisite...not just squirrels in the park or flowers or even insects...nope...they need to go crawl into caves and take picture high definition of lets say bats with closed eyes...they need to take pictures of the flowing waters in North Pole and Greenland ice shelf lakes...

You definitely could with those skills. Of course, I could understand if it's something you like so much you don't want to ruin it by making it your job.

Yeah, I do. We used to go to different schools together back in '63. Man could he drink! Never seen anyone (anybug?) down so much Jack Daniel's.
Quite the lady's man too, I mean lady's bug, if I remember right.
