View Full Version : Conversating Thread

Had hard time deciding title to thread. Either the above, chat room thread, question/conversation thread, etc, you get the point. I'm mostly starting it because I see that sciforums is without a chat room--- of course, it is also without much freedom while everyone bounces around threads posting their bla-did-idilie talk back and foruth, so here it is. Ask your questions, talk to members, bla. I liked the idea of it and hope you guys will too. I have had in mind a question so i'm going to just sum up one.

Yeah, I don't know if you guys know me well or not. Some people know me better than others do, others think they know me.

Anyway this thread is mostly for you guys. Not for me.

Here is a question I would like to ask you fellow members anyway:

Is anyone here a fan of any particular philosopher, moreso than others? Who. Why?

Another related one:

How do you think about life? This is in terms of how you use thought in relation to life. I was just going to start up the conversation, so... I guess I hope you to have fun. That's what it's for.

I mostly come to this site for a fresh experience to my day. I've met a lot of really cool people here and some friends even.

BEGIN!!

duendy
02-16-06, 05:18 PM
great idea)))))))Existabrent

tried to reply to your quote, but my system went haywire...???

ok, you ask:
'a fan of any philosopher? who? why?

i ham currently reading 'Critique of Patriarchal Reason', by Arthur Evans
i have wanted this book for ages, but you cant get it in this country.....well i managed on rare book place and they said it'd be £40....!
so got a friend to get it me used copy from U.S, £11...odd. MUC beteer!
it is a beautifull book. with artwork by Frank Pietronigro., so WELL WORTH IT

why?? I LOVE tis dude. he is a real character. he inspired tis merry bumnch called te Radical Faeries who encourages wild abandon in the wood and hills, which i like.....and has been a major spokerperson and writer for the ...marginalized-from-patriarchal-culture

heres some from book's back:
'A philosopher and artist join hands in this book to reclaim philosophy as an art....Their book shows how patriarcha biases have infected formal logic, higher mathematics, and the scientific method. It demonstrates the harmful impact of these biases on omen, gay people, artists, indigenous societies, and te natrual environment. In place of these biases, the book offers a new, liberatin view of the role of reason in human life...'

why? cause i have come to this in my own way. so i am learning his way of understanding thi. it is really intersting but hard going in places.

you als ask: 'howdo you think about life?'

i think that tis world and universe is mindb.owin's moter. it is so amazing....so i am really really desperately sad when i see so much dullness. how the world has been made like a fukin prison byan opressive mindset(S)

sisyphus__
02-16-06, 05:26 PM
cool duendy

I have my own views to express in relation to yours, though they are probably, as you say, deepend by an opressive mindset (S). Getting to life for me is a problem (as you well know duendy). That sounds like an interesting book, and shows your depth in thought imo.

thanks

also my main thread is started, and I am hoping to have this present thread also open for gaining personal insight into the issue. it is mental health and the existentialists: 2. As you guys should be able to tell, unfortunately: I have it bad off. Though this is mostly in response to duendy........

The Boss was in quandary. He had to fire somebody. He had it narrowed down to one of two people, Debra or Jack. It was an impossible decision, they were both super workers. Rather than flip a coin, he decided he would fire the first one who used the water cooler the next morning.

Debra came in the next morning with a horrible hang-over after partying all night. She went to the cooler to take an aspirin. The Boss approached her and said: " Debra, I've never done this before, but I have to lay you or Jack off." "Could you jack off?" she says. "I feel like shit."

I don't really live, by most people's standard. I sleep, wake up, and do one of three things for the most part: 1. Watch tv 2. Get on the internet or play a computer game 3. Read. I can stay in my house for weeks at a go. Moreso lately than normal. Of course, I eat too.

Varda
02-16-06, 07:49 PM
I might as well reply

my favourite philosopher is baruch the spinoza, i think... i don't like to name favourites because i like a lot of stuff. I think i like it so much because i read a lot of his work at very young age and it influenced me a lot. i think he was briliant.

my absolutely favourite author is carl sagan. i dont know if he is considered to be a philosopher, though he has some amazing insights. i think my brain kind of works like his because the things he wrote make a lot of sense to me. i read all of his books over and over.

Brazil was nice, but I didn't like Rio that much. I couldn't really relax there. And after a daylight robbery at gunpoint I wisely moved on. I skipped Sao paulo.

It could have been my own fault. I had been walking the streets alone already for more than a week in Rio and nothing happened. We even went during the night to places they said we shouldn't go. Nothing happened And then I agreed to go with some fresh tourists to go visit a tourist sight and we probably looked too touristy and were in the wrong place. A 9 mm was shoved in the face and the money was stolen. Mind you they only took my small stash of money (one small stash of money in the pocket, a larger stash somewhere else). The fresh tourists had their cameras, credit cars etc stolen. But it wasn't quite the experience I was looking for. So I moved on.

No, am currently working. I am very responsible lately. Which is a tad boring I must admit.

Have you "backpacked across Europe," so to say, in your past? From some of your posts, it seems like it. What do you do, btw? Work-wise.

spuriousmonkey
02-17-06, 08:57 AM
I haven't backpacked accros Europe. I am Dutch. Lived in Finland for more than 5 years. Visited many places in Europe of course during my life. And now I am in Florida doing some research as a post doc. I'm a developmental biologist.

I was in South American a year ago for two months backpacking. I'm not sure two months counts as proper backpacking time though. It's quite short. I did have the lightest backpack of everyone I came accross. Most people couldn't even walk around for an hour with the luggage they were carrying around. That kind of takes away the meaning of backpacking I think. My backpack was fully loaded 15kg or less (When I left it was only 12kg and it gained some weight during the trip)). No, I didn't visit any fancy places. Started in Rio, moved my way down brazil by bus. Crossed the border to Uruguay. Stayed a bit longer there. Moved to argentina. Moved a bit around in the north of it. Ended up again in montevideo, uruguay. Then headed back north again to Rio eventually. Brasil wasn't my place. It's difficult to get around if you don't speak the lingo. It was better in uruguay and argentina.

Cottontop3000
02-17-06, 09:26 AM
Alright, cool. LOL at the "not being able to get around in your backpack 'cause it's too heavy" thing. Sounds about right. I did a lot of "humping it" in the army, and you better be able to lug what you got. Comfortable boots or shoes too. How do you like the U.S.?

about life
i am happy because i have everything that i need. there are lots of things that i want, but while i am happy i can work on getting them little by little... they dont make me happier though.
i have been working for years on building a carreer and that makes me satisfied with myself, but it is very vain and it is not the most important thing for me. i just think of it as a mean to reach my purpose, which is, if you think of it, very simple and not glamurous at all.
i think i am here on earth for one purpose and that is to have a child. to my child i will devote my life.

Cottontop3000
02-17-06, 03:46 PM

Life is supposed to suck. That is what is so great about it. Forget about life being great by being fulfilling and satisfying. That is a fairytale. Just accept life for what life is and then you can start enjoying the misery.

Although clowns are the ultimate evil, the mime is a sneaky bastard on a much grander scale, indubitably. They do not speak for a reason. Their voice will give their true nature away. Mimes aren't just ultimate evil, Mimes gave birth to all the evil in the universe. They are beyond evil, indubitably.

And it will not be a 'fucking hilarious' war. Have you ever seen a mime and a clown together in the same room? No. Because hell will brake loose when they come within 5 meters of each other. Women will spontaneously loose their ovaries, Men will find their prostrate exploded into their rectum, children will see their favourite toys burn, and their not so favourite toys covered with tiger excrement. It will be 'fucking cataclysmic'.

I shiver in terror from the thought....

To think a mime-clown war is a funny affair is opprobrious.

Clowns are evil. Well, some of them.

I think the mimes would win. They could easily outproduce the clowns in terms of armaments, if necessary. Mimes could just...mime in thousands of tanks. Clowns actually have to make them with balloons.
The only wild card here would be the magicians. They might aid the clowns, but then again, they might just take on all comers, loosing thier vicious multicoloured hordes of rabits, tigers, and bears on people...

Dammit! I was goi ng to surprise my wife with a genesis (yes, she likes video games :p) but I couldn't find the damn cables! :(
I wondered around downtown trying to find cables to fit. I was looking into two versions of the console. Both needed two cables. I could only find one cable for each but no two matching cables... :(

Now I have to look on eBay.....

Parents nowdays are often very self-centered. It's sad, but true.
Really, parenting is the most important thing in the world. If you do it well, your kid will positively add to the world. If you don't do it well, it will have a negative effect. I think that is pretty important and is unfortunately overlooked by our societies.

It must be difficult to gauge the skill of parenting, because each child is different and there's no way to tell what their potential really was.

use the chinese method...bring lotsa cool small stuff of everyday life and put that stuff around the baby, if the baby picks a small knife for example...then the baby will be a butcher...if the baby picks a logarithmic differentiation book then the baby will savor the math and thus be a mathematician...if the baby picks a shotgun well then maybe u shouldnt have put a shotgun there... And whatever the baby picks, thats what he will be best at.
