View Full Version : Conversating Thread
sisyphus__ 02-16-06, 04:43 PM Had hard time deciding title to thread. Either the above, chat room thread, question/conversation thread, etc, you get the point. I'm mostly starting it because I see that sciforums is without a chat room--- of course, it is also without much freedom while everyone bounces around threads posting their bla-did-idilie talk back and foruth, so here it is. Ask your questions, talk to members, bla. I liked the idea of it and hope you guys will too. I have had in mind a question so i'm going to just sum up one.
Yeah, I don't know if you guys know me well or not. Some people know me better than others do, others think they know me.
Anyway this thread is mostly for you guys. Not for me.
Here is a question I would like to ask you fellow members anyway:
Is anyone here a fan of any particular philosopher, moreso than others? Who. Why?
Another related one:
How do you think about life? This is in terms of how you use thought in relation to life. I was just going to start up the conversation, so... I guess I hope you to have fun. That's what it's for.
I mostly come to this site for a fresh experience to my day. I've met a lot of really cool people here and some friends even.
BEGIN!!
leopold99 02-16-06, 04:58 PM i'm bored out of my frikken mind
crazyfreespirit 02-16-06, 05:01 PM I had a snow day today...meaning I didn't have to go to school...it was nice, I just sat and read for most of the time. *happily drifts off towards book*
sisyphus__ 02-16-06, 05:07 PM snow day............ luck man(/woman). i live in florida.............
you are lucky to be board (my thoughts on that?-------------)...............
sisyphus__ 02-16-06, 05:07 PM :)

sisyphus__ 02-16-06, 05:09 PM Oh yeah, existabrent is offically crazier than cotton top and also siren
great idea)))))))Existabrent
tried to reply to your quote, but my system went haywire...???
ok, you ask:
'a fan of any philosopher? who? why?
i ham currently reading 'Critique of Patriarchal Reason', by Arthur Evans
i have wanted this book for ages, but you cant get it in this country.....well i managed on rare book place and they said it'd be £40....!
so got a friend to get it me used copy from U.S, £11...odd. MUC beteer!
it is a beautifull book. with artwork by Frank Pietronigro., so WELL WORTH IT
why?? I LOVE tis dude. he is a real character. he inspired tis merry bumnch called te Radical Faeries who encourages wild abandon in the wood and hills, which i like.....and has been a major spokerperson and writer for the ...marginalized-from-patriarchal-culture
heres some from book's back:
'A philosopher and artist join hands in this book to reclaim philosophy as an art....Their book shows how patriarcha biases have infected formal logic, higher mathematics, and the scientific method. It demonstrates the harmful impact of these biases on omen, gay people, artists, indigenous societies, and te natrual environment. In place of these biases, the book offers a new, liberatin view of the role of reason in human life...'
why? cause i have come to this in my own way. so i am learning his way of understanding thi. it is really intersting but hard going in places.
you als ask: 'howdo you think about life?'
i think that tis world and universe is mindb.owin's moter. it is so amazing....so i am really really desperately sad when i see so much dullness. how the world has been made like a fukin prison byan opressive mindset(S)
sisyphus__ 02-16-06, 05:26 PM cool duendy
I have my own views to express in relation to yours, though they are probably, as you say, deepend by an opressive mindset (S). Getting to life for me is a problem (as you well know duendy). That sounds like an interesting book, and shows your depth in thought imo.
thanks
also my main thread is started, and I am hoping to have this present thread also open for gaining personal insight into the issue. it is mental health and the existentialists: 2. As you guys should be able to tell, unfortunately: I have it bad off. Though this is mostly in response to duendy........
;)
crazyfreespirit 02-16-06, 05:55 PM snow day............ luck man(/woman). i live in florida.............
it would be woman :p Ya, living in Canada has its definate ups, the weather (sometimes) being among those.
Florida...I was just about to say that would be awsome, but then I remembered hurricanes.
leopold99 02-16-06, 06:17 PM The Boss was in quandary. He had to fire somebody. He had it narrowed down to one of two people, Debra or Jack. It was an impossible decision, they were both super workers. Rather than flip a coin, he decided he would fire the first one who used the water cooler the next morning.
Debra came in the next morning with a horrible hang-over after partying all night. She went to the cooler to take an aspirin. The Boss approached her and said: " Debra, I've never done this before, but I have to lay you or Jack off." "Could you jack off?" she says. "I feel like shit."
sisyphus__ 02-16-06, 06:21 PM seriously. there is a threat of that in every case
sisyphus__ 02-16-06, 07:19 PM was wondering how u guys live life. don't know how to myself. cool. thanks :D
Cottontop3000 02-16-06, 07:36 PM I don't really live, by most people's standard. I sleep, wake up, and do one of three things for the most part: 1. Watch tv 2. Get on the internet or play a computer game 3. Read. I can stay in my house for weeks at a go. Moreso lately than normal. Of course, I eat too.
leopold99 02-16-06, 07:48 PM hey man, hows it going down there in brazil?
I might as well reply
my favourite philosopher is baruch the spinoza, i think... i don't like to name favourites because i like a lot of stuff. I think i like it so much because i read a lot of his work at very young age and it influenced me a lot. i think he was briliant.
my absolutely favourite author is carl sagan. i dont know if he is considered to be a philosopher, though he has some amazing insights. i think my brain kind of works like his because the things he wrote make a lot of sense to me. i read all of his books over and over.
hey man, hows it going down there in brazil?
wonderful, as usual
i think between canada and florida i'd stick with são paulo :D... summer all year long and no hurricanes
spuriousmonkey 02-16-06, 07:53 PM My favourite philosopher is my best friend. That's because we always end up discussing something interesting over a beer. Or not and that is ok too. Unfortunately there is an ocean between us right now and I am stuck with americans (no offense leopold).
spuriousmonkey 02-16-06, 07:56 PM wonderful, as usual
i think between canada and florida i'd stick with são paulo :D... summer all year long and no hurricanes
Brazil was nice, but I didn't like Rio that much. I couldn't really relax there. And after a daylight robbery at gunpoint I wisely moved on. I skipped Sao paulo.
wow really? i've never been robbed in my life
haha that's what you get for looking like a gringo
as much as i might love são paulo i must say you didn't miss much... it's a huge city, big cities all look the same
Which city is bigger - Sao Paulo or Mexico DF?
leopold99 02-16-06, 08:15 PM and no hurricanes
lucky you, my area is under a tornado watch as we speak
i might have to make a mad dash to the basement
spuriousmonkey 02-16-06, 08:17 PM haha that's what you get for looking like a gringo
It could have been my own fault. I had been walking the streets alone already for more than a week in Rio and nothing happened. We even went during the night to places they said we shouldn't go. Nothing happened And then I agreed to go with some fresh tourists to go visit a tourist sight and we probably looked too touristy and were in the wrong place. A 9 mm was shoved in the face and the money was stolen. Mind you they only took my small stash of money (one small stash of money in the pocket, a larger stash somewhere else). The fresh tourists had their cameras, credit cars etc stolen. But it wasn't quite the experience I was looking for. So I moved on.
leopold99 02-16-06, 08:18 PM I am stuck with americans (no offense leopold).
i think ol spurious might be getting a little homesick
Cottontop3000 02-16-06, 08:20 PM You on foot, spurious? Wandering?
spuriousmonkey 02-16-06, 08:23 PM No, am currently working. I am very responsible lately. Which is a tad boring I must admit.
yep, you were asking to be robbed :)
sisyphus__ 02-16-06, 08:49 PM better responsible than not ....
i'm going to respond to something, right now, i gotta go feed the dogs
this thread is cool, i just figured that out <- ->
sisyphus__ 02-16-06, 09:05 PM now, i'm going to leave this thread a bit and let you guys do the talking of course i will come back later I hope you have fun I look forward to reading
Cottontop3000 02-17-06, 08:43 AM No, am currently working. I am very responsible lately. Which is a tad boring I must admit.
Have you "backpacked across Europe," so to say, in your past? From some of your posts, it seems like it. What do you do, btw? Work-wise.
spuriousmonkey 02-17-06, 08:57 AM I haven't backpacked accros Europe. I am Dutch. Lived in Finland for more than 5 years. Visited many places in Europe of course during my life. And now I am in Florida doing some research as a post doc. I'm a developmental biologist.
I was in South American a year ago for two months backpacking. I'm not sure two months counts as proper backpacking time though. It's quite short. I did have the lightest backpack of everyone I came accross. Most people couldn't even walk around for an hour with the luggage they were carrying around. That kind of takes away the meaning of backpacking I think. My backpack was fully loaded 15kg or less (When I left it was only 12kg and it gained some weight during the trip)). No, I didn't visit any fancy places. Started in Rio, moved my way down brazil by bus. Crossed the border to Uruguay. Stayed a bit longer there. Moved to argentina. Moved a bit around in the north of it. Ended up again in montevideo, uruguay. Then headed back north again to Rio eventually. Brasil wasn't my place. It's difficult to get around if you don't speak the lingo. It was better in uruguay and argentina.
Cottontop3000 02-17-06, 09:26 AM Alright, cool. LOL at the "not being able to get around in your backpack 'cause it's too heavy" thing. Sounds about right. I did a lot of "humping it" in the army, and you better be able to lug what you got. Comfortable boots or shoes too. How do you like the U.S.?
Which city is bigger - Sao Paulo or Mexico DF?
Ciudad del Mexico
it goes
New York > Mexico > São Paulo... i think
about life
i am happy because i have everything that i need. there are lots of things that i want, but while i am happy i can work on getting them little by little... they dont make me happier though.
i have been working for years on building a carreer and that makes me satisfied with myself, but it is very vain and it is not the most important thing for me. i just think of it as a mean to reach my purpose, which is, if you think of it, very simple and not glamurous at all.
i think i am here on earth for one purpose and that is to have a child. to my child i will devote my life.
Cottontop3000 02-17-06, 03:46 PM There are so many things I could say to that, but I won't because Roman will be all over me. :)
sisyphus__ 02-17-06, 03:47 PM sartre says everybody must choose. that's the only thing i think about life. besides i'm utterly insane and can't do a damn thing about it. must see a docter but mother doesn't believe me why the hell doesn't she what the ...
apparently people must have a damn life what the
varda that is admirable. i suffer shock
see my thread mental health and the existentialists:2 where all this is discussed in detail hopefully.

spuriousmonkey 02-17-06, 03:58 PM Life is supposed to suck. That is what is so great about it. Forget about life being great by being fulfilling and satisfying. That is a fairytale. Just accept life for what life is and then you can start enjoying the misery.
Life is supposed to suck. That is what is so great about it. Forget about life being great by being fulfilling and satisfying. That is a fairytale. Just accept life for what life is and then you can start enjoying the misery.
so do yu think ten te 'misery' is inevitable. do you feel we should speak out---have a vision how tings might improve for our and all species on this small planet Earth
Cottontop3000 02-17-06, 04:09 PM Nice spurious. I agree whole-heartedly. By the way, life is a bitch and then you divorce a couple.
sisyphus__ 02-17-06, 06:17 PM good idea duendy

Cottontop3000 02-18-06, 07:31 AM Yeah, trust me. For me it was vincent28uk, J.B (aka Jaybee from his cast), and a couple others. Let it go. Put him on ignore for a while. It's not worth it. There are plenty of good people here, and just a few idiots. Do yourself a favor and ignore them.
leopold99 02-18-06, 07:33 AM i'm going offline before i say something stupid
Cottontop3000 02-18-06, 07:34 AM alright. see ya later.

sisyphus__ 02-18-06, 04:59 PM cyprus.. does sound familar.
i am a chain smoker who is trying to learn the reality of chain smoking. just started smoking like 3 years ago (i am 20), and trying to wonder also about the reality of duendy
however it seems like whenever i do open my mouth in this thread, i mess up everyone elses' talking with each other! which sucks. sucks. sucks. sucks sucks, sucks sucks, sucks.... SUCKS SUCKs!!!!
tablariddim 02-18-06, 05:06 PM Why is sucks a derogatory term?
sisyphus__ 02-18-06, 05:10 PM i get in trouble everytime i say that word
Cottontop3000 02-18-06, 05:15 PM I enquired about buying something from USA and FEDEX couldn't give a shipping quote because they'd never heard of Cyprus! FEDEX! Have any of you heard of Cyprus... know where it is?It constantly amazes me how geographically-challenged most Americans are. Cyprus, island south of Turkey.

Yey...Russia and USA got the most gold medals in Torino.
it must be a woman-thaaang....to suck..??

sisyphus__ 02-18-06, 05:18 PM what the hell do u care for geography?
tablariddim 02-18-06, 05:18 PM Duendy, you should know better.

sisyphus__ 02-18-06, 05:21 PM ahhhhhhhh (i actually worded that out loud B4--I wrote that). sorta an eeekk thing
sisyphus__ 02-18-06, 05:22 PM thread don't suck man
tablariddim 02-18-06, 05:24 PM Exactly! Sucking is great, so why do they say jees this n that sux? Is it like saying it's Bad, when it's actually Good?
Cottontop3000 02-18-06, 05:24 PM thread rocks man. don't no one say this thread sucks!! ya hear?!

Cottontop3000 02-18-06, 05:28 PM It sure does, dragon. SUUUCCCKKKKSSSSSS!!!!!
sisyphus__ 02-18-06, 05:29 PM i actually thought duendy mean that to begin with refering to me and how men think women suck. but women do suck, and women are also imposible to say that one is inferior to a man. i am a single indiv. woman is a single indiv. as a race? it is different looking at it. ......
tablariddim 02-18-06, 05:31 PM Bloody hell it's late, time for nanna guys.
Cottontop3000 02-18-06, 05:42 PM Later gator.

as much as i might love são paulo i must say you didn't miss much... it's a huge city, big cities all look the same
Not really. Big cities look quite different here in Canada. They are just amazing...!
haha are there even any big cities in canada?
oh, and hello :D
TruthSeeker 02-18-06, 06:22 PM oi,
E frias no inverno...

TruthSeeker 02-18-06, 06:40 PM ... :D
we are going to kill this thread with all this ooga booga :p
TruthSeeker 02-18-06, 08:09 PM Hey...! It's the conversating thread! It HAS to talk with itself! :D
i could never understand the "suck" thing
i cant think of sucking as being something bad
the first thing that comes to my mind is a very juicy ripe fruit
TruthSeeker 02-18-06, 08:28 PM Huuuuuummm.... juicy..... that's what comes to my mind.... :D:D:D
TruthSeeker 02-18-06, 08:39 PM That's what I'm good at! :D
Hehe... and yesterday my wife's obstetrician urged me to have lots of sex with my wife to accelerate pre-labour. Ok! Time to work hard! :D
It's such a hard life...! :D

sisyphus__ 03-01-06, 09:40 PM Truthseeker,
have you ever read "The dharma of Star Wars"?
imo, thats a pretty cool book...
TruthSeeker 03-01-06, 09:50 PM No. Sounds very interesting. Is it avaiable on-line? :)
sisyphus__ 03-01-06, 09:56 PM no idea,
author: Matthew Bortolin,
It isn't as much clarity as I would expect buddhism to be, (my expectations, go figure) but it is really cool still
sisyphus__ 03-01-06, 09:59 PM It is very clear, "accessable"
sisyphus__ 03-01-06, 09:59 PM "the jedi art of mindfulness and concentration"
*smiles*
sisyphus__ 03-01-06, 10:00 PM really, it's pretty cool though!
i mean, very cool
Hapsburg 03-01-06, 10:08 PM Know what'd be interesting to see? A War between the mimes and the clowns. That'd be fuckin' hilarious to watch. BTW, who do ya'll think'd win?
spuriousmonkey 03-02-06, 07:43 AM Although clowns are the ultimate evil, the mime is a sneaky bastard on a much grander scale, indubitably. They do not speak for a reason. Their voice will give their true nature away. Mimes aren't just ultimate evil, Mimes gave birth to all the evil in the universe. They are beyond evil, indubitably.
And it will not be a 'fucking hilarious' war. Have you ever seen a mime and a clown together in the same room? No. Because hell will brake loose when they come within 5 meters of each other. Women will spontaneously loose their ovaries, Men will find their prostrate exploded into their rectum, children will see their favourite toys burn, and their not so favourite toys covered with tiger excrement. It will be 'fucking cataclysmic'.
I shiver in terror from the thought....
To think a mime-clown war is a funny affair is opprobrious.
TruthSeeker 03-02-06, 11:08 AM Clowns are evil. Well, some of them.
Hapsburg 03-02-06, 02:24 PM I think the mimes would win. They could easily outproduce the clowns in terms of armaments, if necessary. Mimes could just...mime in thousands of tanks. Clowns actually have to make them with balloons.
The only wild card here would be the magicians. They might aid the clowns, but then again, they might just take on all comers, loosing thier vicious multicoloured hordes of rabits, tigers, and bears on people...
Cottontop3000 03-02-06, 03:36 PM Very well said Spuriousmonkey. I'm most impressed with your broad knowledge of the English language. :D
Cottontop3000 03-02-06, 05:57 PM that's ok. go eat about 6 ibuprofen. have some chocolate. then go get some sleep.
i had a fight with my brother over something stupid
sisyphus__ 03-02-06, 06:09 PM i'm struggling with going insane.
Cottontop3000 03-02-06, 06:14 PM i had a fight with my brother over something stupid
Have you made up with him? If not, do.
i'm struggling with going insane.we're all insane, my man. don't struggle so much. :)
sisyphus__ 03-02-06, 06:16 PM my ass?
Cottontop3000 03-02-06, 06:18 PM yeah, if you must struggle, struggle with that.
maybe he should stop caring too :)
i fell bad that i turned a little disagreement with my brother into such a big deal... it'll take him some time to be alright with me again
i wish i could take it back, i love my brother
sisyphus__ 03-02-06, 06:18 PM damn....
sisyphus__ 03-02-06, 06:21 PM know hwo you feel varda, used to be the same way with me and my bro.
well that was when we was kids, though
i'd chase him around t he yard with sticks and large poles.. wait that was him... and then i'd run after him like i was gonna murder him
Cottontop3000 03-02-06, 06:26 PM maybe he should stop caring too :)That's what I was thinking about. :)
i fell bad that i turned a little disagreement with my brother into such a big deal... it'll take him some time to be alright with me again
i wish i could take it back, i love my brotherI've done it many times too with mine. I'm sure he knows you love him, and he probably feels the same way about it that you do. If you want to talk about it, I'm here. :)
TruthSeeker 03-02-06, 10:26 PM Dammit! I was goi ng to surprise my wife with a genesis (yes, she likes video games :p) but I couldn't find the damn cables! :(
I wondered around downtown trying to find cables to fit. I was looking into two versions of the console. Both needed two cables. I could only find one cable for each but no two matching cables... :(
Now I have to look on eBay.....
TruthSeeker 03-02-06, 10:43 PM Damn! This shit is addictive! :p

My wife is watching it, and there is this really pathetic guy that only thinks of himself and behave like a pampered kid. *watching* He's so stupid.... *watching* Geeeez...
Not the first time I see pathetic parents...

TruthSeeker 03-03-06, 01:39 AM Parents nowdays are often very self-centered. It's sad, but true.
Really, parenting is the most important thing in the world. If you do it well, your kid will positively add to the world. If you don't do it well, it will have a negative effect. I think that is pretty important and is unfortunately overlooked by our societies.

Your societies...but not our societies...the society I am in does not overlook that.
TruthSeeker 03-03-06, 05:03 PM Oh really? And where are you from?
Unless your country is filled with perfect people, yours is included....
spuriousmonkey 03-03-06, 05:08 PM How long exactly have you now been a parent truthseeker?
TruthSeeker 03-03-06, 08:00 PM Not yet. Almost there. So what?
spuriousmonkey 03-03-06, 09:03 PM Maybe other people think they are good parents too.
congrats...its a baby boy...and a fine one, o my...let me just leave this phone number of my daughter in this baby's pouch, so that when he grows up, he knows whom to call...
Theoryofrelativity 03-04-06, 02:20 PM It's true that we are all perfect parents until we become them!
Blue_UK 03-04-06, 08:26 PM It must be difficult to gauge the skill of parenting, because each child is different and there's no way to tell what their potential really was.
use the chinese method...bring lotsa cool small stuff of everyday life and put that stuff around the baby, if the baby picks a small knife for example...then the baby will be a butcher...if the baby picks a logarithmic differentiation book then the baby will savor the math and thus be a mathematician...if the baby picks a shotgun well then maybe u shouldnt have put a shotgun there... And whatever the baby picks, thats what he will be best at.
