I want to buy a new computer before Christmas, when would be good time to buy? Is there anything new I should wait for?

For example will hard drives that using flash ram be on the cards soon etc?

What about quad core will that be worth having in 6 months?

Or are there other things I should wait for?

    Cheers

The cheapest time is black Friday after Thanksgiving, if you don't mind waking up early.

Personally, unless you have special needs, computers today and even yesterday knew enough what the average user needed...

I can't wait for hard drives that use NAND (flash) memory to come out mainstream. Virtually no boot time and file access will be instantaneous. Power consumption will go down and so will the heat produced.

Core 2 Quad (Previously Core 2 Extreme) is now officially out. The Release was circa May. However it's currently only Desktops that can use it and it won't be until next year until the Mobile Core 2 Quad's come out. Even then there is another couple of codenamed chipsets waiting in the shadows.

Technically intel's Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad are Single processors with multiple execution cores within them, Which means they process like multiple processors.

Since Core 2 Quad is new, it's obviously going to have the markup that new things have until next year at least, however it is possible that Core 2 Duo's will come down in price. Obviously if you wanted a cheap laptop with Core 2 Quad, then you'll probably not find one until 2009.

As also mentioned the only other thing that seems to be a major breakthrough thats being developed is hard-drives. Since the industry is now looking at Power Conservation it means some redevelopment in the architecture and many of the peripheral components to lower the power usage.

This does mean that the future PSU's (Power Supply Units) won't be increasing the Wattage output, but will probably start lowering again when the architecture permits it. Using less power means alot of things, It's good for the environment (Less fossil fuel's being burnt), it costs less to run, the less consumption of energy the more items can be run at the same time.

It's especially handy for laptop owners that find their batteries are always running down too quick.

Quad is out? Good. Prices on Core2Duo maybe will go down.

I plan to buy a computer for hdv editing later this summer.

Quad was targeted for the month of May 2007, There are a few online shops selling Quad packages. Hopefully they will be down in price for you Avatar, however I suspect it will be really dependent on the market place. For instance most "Rebate Deals" in companies like Compusa are currently running until the end of July/ Beginning of August. This means those product lines intend to have the same prices up until then, then of course new product lines will come in to take their place creating the sale of old stock.

I'm not sure which country will see the stock changes first.

Care to suggest anything for a video editing station?
Frankly I'm out of the loop, been happily using my P4 1.8ghz, 512Ram, Radeon9000 for some 5 years, but I'll need more power than that.

I am looking at systems myself. I am planning on buying some high end system personally; something like Dual Core Xeon / multi socket. 4 Gig Ram,256 - 512 MB Video Ram GPU ( prolly ATI ), and perhaps a decent HDD, (i"ll upgrade it later maybe)

Once ATI finishes their drivers for the new R600 cards (always takes them at least a couple months to get the drivers working properly after releasing a new card) I'd go for one of those.

For video editing you'll want as much RAM as you can use (4 GB if you're using XP) and one of Intel's dual or quad cores. Most video and graphics applications can take advantage of the extra threads in these CPU's.

For the OP, the answer to a similar question:

Five reasons to delay buying your laptop until later this year or early in 2008:

    1. A new device, "solid-state drive" or SSD, will replace the traditional hard disk with a faster, less fragile drive made of flash memory chips like those used in digital cameras.

    2. Also coming is a "hybrid hard drive" or HHD, which combines memory chips with a standard hard disk for faster start-ups.

    3. More laptops will be using light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, to light up their screens, a method that promises to be both brighter and less power-hungry.

    4. A new type of Wi-Fi wireless network, called N, promises to be faster and to have longer range; N capability will eventually be built into the new machines.

    5. For Windows Vista users, another new laptop feature coming soon is a small screen on the lid called a SideShow, which can display the user's calendar appointments and new e-mails.
