I understand that some computer scientists have been attempting to replicate evolution in their computers. Has this panned out?

no. and it never will. for the sole reason that computers are designed and built by an intelligence.
the best that can be hoped for is a simulation.

Yes, computer scientists have been able to use the principles of evolution in a non-biological sense to evolve programs that solve problems in unusual ways.

The use of computers to design based on computational trial and error seems to have incredible potential. I would guess that it may become one of the most important tools ever devised.

I believe those are advancements, yes, although they can never predict how species are going to exactly evolve, they surely create possible scenarios. Possible doesn’t mean it is a future fact, but it is certainly feasible.
