It is Windows XP and I have 2 users on it. I set up the Powermanagement the same way on both, after 10 mins of inactivity it should go to Standby. It does turn the monitor off, but the harddisk keeps spinning....

Any idea? Could the 2 users be a problem?

I would suggest that you don't use standby mode. All my experience with this has shown it will eventually mess up your computer. Standby is evil :P

I usually put it in Standby overnight. What is the problem that you experienced?

As about the original question, it is most likely a small program/virus running continiously that makes the CPU working all the time. How well, it is the kid's computer...

Trying to wake it up out of standby. Always messes up, no matter what verson of windows I use, what computer, it always gives me grief. But hey, I'm sure it works for some people, it just never behaved with me.

I'd have more luck bringing people out of a coma.

Does anything unusual show up in task manager?

No, but when I researched the problem, that's what caused for others similar problems.

Also it looks like the harddrive keeps spinning all the time, and I don't think it should be the case. Like right now, what is it spinning for?

How much RAM does the machine have? How many applications are you running?

It's probably page-file use.

It could be anything. Give it a blast with whatever anti-virus you have, just to put your mind at rest.

Have you actually set your Harddrive to power down after the 15mins?

I ask as there is more than one item to set in the powerdown menu.

If you have then the other potential is checking your BIOS settings, some systems have settings in their BIOS for "Waking up". If you happen to have one of those set, then their might be a confliction with how it powers down and how it wakes up.

Personally I don't use Standby (or Hibernate) just incase it causes problem, so I can only give you educated guesses over experience.

Did you run spyware and virus tests. As you said it can be about that.

Could it be the fan that keeps spinning?

I have a standby problem with my laptop. Sometimes, after waking up from standby, the fan starts working loudly and slows down the computer to a crawl. I have to reboot the computer. Never had the time to fix it.

In any case, if it is the fan check this (http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-11184-0.html?forumID=56&threadID=167961)out. Not too many suggestions there but it may be your problem who knows.

No, it is the harddisk, I can feel it with my hand. I am more than positive that it is some virus, but so far I have been too lazy to fix it. Since it is the kid's machine, there is a good chance to get another virus soon, and since everything else is working,I don't want to mess with it until it breaks down...
