I have no idea where this thought came from...

I just wondered, is there an animal equivalent of ASD in other pack social species? Like, say, an inability to read or understand signals from other animals and so forth?

I've seen animals that seemed a little odd in their ways. They usually do not last long however for the strong feed on the weak.

Odd doesn't mean they're weak and can't survive.

No but if the whole pack turns against them, even fairly strong ones won't last against multiple assailants.

But yes, animals can misinterpret one another quite often. Even a dog can misinterpret another dog. One of the reasons being is that all canine language started with and came from wolves. One of their ways of communicating is with their perma-perked up ears. Cropped Dobermans, GSDs and some other dogs have those types of ears. Now what sometimes happens is that when you have a floppy eared type dog (i.e. beagle, labrador, etc.) that cannot perk its ears up like a wolf, GSD, it cannot make gestures as precise and can often be misinterpreted by other dogs.
Likewise, dogs with docked tails are not as obvious with their wagging as dogs with full tails.

what is ASD?

Orly, ASD = autism spectrum disorder. More a continuum than a single discrete syndrome. You can have some traits but not others, but one of the main ones is lack of ability to read people.
