I was wondering about what makes you want to buy something. Is that universal or does it depend on nationality? Are there commercials that stick in your mind? Does humour work better than sentimentality or vise versa?

    humour
sentimentality (this one worked better on me cuz I cried)

LOL, no next time I was in the store looking at which beer was on sale, I bought Bud because I remembered the commercial. I didn't even care that it wasn't on sale.

There are commercials that are very good in all aspects of advertising. Many commercials I see I really don't like because they are not informative enough for ME. Overall the funny ones get me to watch them more often than most of the rest.

That's got to be a first. You bought beer that wasn't on sale. Did you put in a special order.

To find out which ads work best just see how often they are repeated. Ads are monitored and those that are not paying their way are dropped. Happy watching. I remember my first trip to the US, when I was surprised to see snatches of programs between the ads.

Ps Potentially expensive campaigns are test- marketed on a small scale before going national

The only reason that ads are repeated so often is because the advertisers got a better rate per commercial if they bought more time slots.

Not so. Have you heard of a company calleds Nielsens ? They are one of many who do exactly what I said; they measure the effectiveness of ads in terms of sales. An advertiser can buy more time slots but he doesn't have to use the same ad if it is not getting results.

I don't watch tv or listen to radio, so I don't see that many commercials, only posters on the streets.
I tend to buy food that's more natural, I think in the west you call it organic food.
Basically I buy quality products either from my own experience, or that of others. Quite often it's not the most expensibe thing.
    I think brands are stupid.

Lucky you. My wife buys produce grown as close to home as possible which is about 12 miles. We are fortunate because it is not possible for people living in cities to do so.

You are right about brands. They are just a way of making more money for the supermarkets. This applies particularly to so called convenience foods which can cost up to three times the value of the contents.

I could write pages about scandals in the food industry but I think I have said enough for now.

For a music one, I'd have to pick

I'd never heard that song before and I had to immediately find out who she was and what she was singing. Of course, for me it was more of a commercial for Feist, than for the ipod.

Mostly the song which also somewhat reminded me of the film "Mirrormask" and the white visuals somewhat reminded me of Bjork's video "All is full of love" both of which I like quite much.

    Kinda nauseating, actually.

    I mean - Thousands killed... ...have a Bud !

    Here's one...
Lyndon Johnson campaign ad from the 1964 Presidential race, hinting that opponent Barry Goldwater's aggressive foreign policy stance might have dire consequences.

but it wasn't about selling beer. There was no beer shown in the commercial. It was about acknowledging the fallen. If they had been trying to make money they would have shown it more than once.

<sigh> why ya gotta try and ruin it??:bawl:
