I am trying to check my disk for errors but keep getting a message about exclusive access (WinXP). How can i rectify this?

Are the any good command line sector scanners independent of Windows that can access over 200gb?

When it asks you if you want to schedule a disk check on startup, hit yes, and reboot your computer. A blue screen will come up..just let it run.

Or boot from your windows installation disk. After it loads, hit R to go to the recovery panel. select your windows installation, and then type "chkdsk /r"

You can also try "sfc /scannow" (without quotes) from command prompt or Run.

I can't think of any specific tools to use, but you should check out Hiren's boot CD. You can find it any any disreputable download site dealing in torrents.

Even if it's no use this time, it's a handy thing to have.

Well i am still having problems. XP became corrupt:

    missing hal.dll, config.sys etc.

Ran C:\fixmbr - C:\fixboot and copied some files. Also, chkdsk from windows to let it scan at boot time, it found bad clusters on the second physical disk. Now i can boot XP, for now anyway because i think this problem will come up again maybe even next time i boot.

phonetic: For disk tools I was just wondering about scan disk surface but also create partitions w\out XP disk etc.

Idle Mind: You can also try "sfc /scannow" (without quotes) from command prompt or Run

    Didn't know that.

    My question is:

How can i have two disks trashed at the same time?

Ran AVG and it found nothing, after i rebooted AVG interface (startup\tray) can no longer load.

    Thanks for the help.
