CNN has a story of several college graduates buried in debt who now say their education wasn't worth the debt they incurred. One of them owes a quarter of a million dollars in student loans. Another complains that after five years of making the minimum payment on their student loans, they now owe more than when they started paying due to interest.

    This guy owes $185k

Personally, I'd say my education was definitely worth the money. Of course, I went to an in state school and worked various jobs the entire time which kept my debt relatively low for eight years of education. Also, my degree was in a field with a good earning potential and one that one could not enter without said degree.

To you future or current college students out there, I say pick your major wisely. Work, if you can, to at least cover your living expenses. Consider a school in your home state (they're usually a lot cheaper). Above all, keep in mind that you'll have to pay back those loans someday.

    Thoughts?

    Eh. He's kinda cute.

Okay. There are TONS of engineering degrees, you just have to be willing to move to where they are. I have to wonder if he's willing to move anywhere they ask.

The cost of tuition has increased dramatically since the time you might have went to school, madanthony, while income has barely increased at all. It is definitely still worth it to go to college (because the alternative is worse) and only if you have a clear career goal in mind, but there is no walking away from the fact that paying for college now is harder than ever it was.

Bear in mind that while tuition has increased since the 1980s, so too has the cost of living all-around. During the Ronald Reagan years, a lot of social programs (including public education) were slashed to the bone. We've been on a seriously downhill slide ever since.

I graduated in 1995, but sure, college tuition costs are one of the few things that go up faster than health care costs.

PS. I'm well aware of the current cost of tuition as I'm currently paying my oldest son's way thru college.
