Possibly our first moderate and first black president. What do you think of the guy? Does he have potential?

Didn't he already run and, like fall out of the race the first week in?

Not yet, but he scares the crud out of the republicans and the democrats. The man has a commoner's background, but pulled himself out of the dirt.

I have a feeling that his personal values can't be purchased.

I'm a Powell enthusiast. I would vote for him, for President, in an instant -- if only he wasn't wearing his wife's panties.

He's too moderate for our own good.

Speaking as an outsider, I have to say I'm very glad that Colin Powell is there to counter some of the Hawks in the current administration. I think he has Presidential potential, but I don't get a vote.

    Mr. G

You enjoy that ride on the pendulum? If somewhere in the middle, we might actually move forward.

Powell would have made a decent (though not spectacular) job of being President if not for the fact he clearly doesn't want the job. How old is he now? 60s? (I don't know). Anyway, looking at it from the outside his chances to run were 96 and 2000 - he could have got the Republican nomination sewn up in either year I reckon, but he just didn't want it. Now Shrub Jr. is obviously going to run in 2004, so that gives Powell one shot - 2008 - left. Cheney clearly isn't going to run, but I expect Shrub will have a new running mate next time round given Cheney's health problems. That means a possible contender in 2008 if (please God, no!) Shrub gets a second term. But he doesn't want it anyway.

Powell is a carreer military man turned administrator - I stop short of politician because I don't see the PR side of his character. He is a government servant that has his own views, but does not crave the attention. I don't see the ego you need to be President, but perhaps I'm wrong. I also think the weight of being the US' first black President is too much for him to bear, and partly why he's avoided it. And if you want to be critical he is basically Bush I all over again - and we all know what a succesful Presidency that was.

And would he win? Is America ready for a black President? Would black people vote for a Republican just because he's black (as the Republicans hope)? Not sure.

I am grateful that he has an influential voice in the current administration though - God knows where we'd be now if he wasn't around...

    Captain Canada ...

Re. "I am grateful that he has an influential voice in the current administration

    "

If Dubya keeps committing troops the way he's doing with his hare brained
paranoia, Powell may well quit and Pat Robinson could take over as Sec.
    of State.

I know it's a horrible thought, but stranger things have happened.

    Take care
