Cold fusion was wishfull thinking that caused some really bad lab work. I suppose people would rather forget it,

Cold fusion is the theory of fusing hydrogen atoms at temperatures much less than the ~100,000,000°C at which hydrogen atoms normally fuse into helium. I'm not too sure on the theorized temperatures for Cold fusion, but I've heard some rumors about wanting it to happen near room temperature. All intelligent minded people in the scientific community have abandoned the Cold Fusion theory because of the realism and possibility of it happening. Hot fusion produces immense amounts of energy, we use it in H-bombs (magnificent and beautiful when detonated) and Fusion is the driving force behind the Sun and the Stars. That's a hell of a lot of energy and heat, so why do we think it should be able to happen at room temperature, it's crazy to think so. I do think it would be a cool thing to have and would pretty much give us free energy for the rest of humanity, but it's not happening.

I also heard somewhere that the catalytic converter used in automobiles accidently came into being because some scientist was attempting cold fusion but instead came out with the catalytic converter. I don't know how true that is though.

Ah the JET. The largest fusion project in the world. I hope the Europeans get that thing to become effeciant someday.

With regards to cold fusion: Taken from wired.com

We have. On March 23, 1989, Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann announced their discovery of "cold fusion." It was the most heavily hyped science story of the decade, but the awed excitement quickly evaporated amid accusations of fraud and incompetence. When it was over, Pons and Fleischmann were humiliated by the scientific establishment; their reputations ruined, they fled from their laboratory and dropped out of sight. "Cold fusion" and "hoax" became synonymous in most people's minds, and today, everyone knows that the idea has been discredited.

Or has it? In fact, despite the scandal, laboratories in at least eight countries are still spending millions on cold fusion research. During the past nine years this work has yielded a huge body of evidence, while remaining virtually unknown - because most academic journals adamantly refuse to publish papers on it. At most, the story of cold fusion represents a colossal conspiracy of denial. At least, it is one of the strangest untold stories in 20th-century science.

The JET managed to break even on power input/output maybe a year or more back.

Oh, maybe i should read more often about it then. Thanks for the info! That's really awesome though and a huge stepping point for getting to fusion power usage.
