Let me start with my favorite, Stephen Hawking. I did a search on ISI - typed in "hawking s w" and came up with a near-complete publication list. For some odd reason he doesn't appear on the highly cited author list. Maybe they are only counting the most recent researchers. So I did a manual count, and his total citation count (mostly within the technical community) is about 21,000. It's probably impossible to count Newton, Darwin, Einstein, Salk, etc.
