Greetings,
Hopefully someone here plays the Chessmaster series and can help me out. I've searched everything I can, and for the life of me cannot figure out how to alter difficulty settings for playing a game. Whatever the default settings are, they're too tough for me, lol. The manual has no info whatsoever with respect to difficulty. Any help would be appreciated.
TIA

Hey glaucon,
I am a 1950+/- expert level player. I had a copy of chessmaster 4000 b4 I gave up on the concept of computer opponents. I found that on any level other than highest, the computer would randomly screw the pooch and give something away that a newbie wouldn't do. In all the highest matches I lost regularly. I had many draws, and to few wins.
I would not expect an 'inferiority augmentation' AI to replacate true gaming dynamics. Todays computing power can defeat Kasparov, but dumbing it down to make realistic lesser rated games in ironically harder.
Regarding the settings, if you haven't read your readme file, contact the manufacturer. F1 is help in many games.
- After clicking on the computer icon you will have the ability to choose your opponent by clicking on Select…. Choose the level opponent you wish to face, and then click on OK. The next Game Details screen should now display the computer controlled opponent you will play against.

Thanks. I'm no slouch when it comes to playing, but I simply found the default settings too tough. I read the readme and, as usual, no help there.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I was hoping there was a way to skip the 'picking your opponent' stage, or at the very least, culling the herd of opponents down to different difficulty groups. Ah well.

I will say this about the chessmaster I had. The opening library of openings was a gem to study.
glaucon,
I don't think you are a slouch at chess. Do you know your rating or an approximation? It might help when selecting opponents. Do you have a chess club in your area? Usually in the book. Normally an open society. Play right off the street. People will play you and likely approximate your rating. Besides it's more fun to play a real opponent. Too bad not as convienient. Enjoy your gaming.
