Why do so many of the threads in the Cesspool get locked? Why not open them? It's not like it counts for post numbers.
Why leave them open? For me, in truth, the question is why any threads in the Cesspool remain open. Originally, the proposition of a Cesspool was to maintain the historical integrity of the site. Before the Cesspool, threads dragged to hell and back by trolls and flamers were simply deleted, which had the effect of eliminating any good posts which might have occurred, thus erasing some people's legitimate efforts to contribute to the community. The Cesspool was a way of sweeping problematic threads out of the way without completely killing good-faith efforts within the discussions. I'm of the opinion that once a thread is dumped in the Cesspool, it has no need to continue. If there is a legitimate discussion to be extracted, it will continue in another thread.
SOME should stay open. It is called safety valve. If there is interest in continuing the discussion, so be it. More views, more clicks, more money for owners, me thinks...
This question comes up every month or two. The Cesspool is a dumping ground for crap. Many threads there contain no useful discussion, or else have degenerated into personal arguments or are otherwise inane or pointless. Leaving such threads open just encourages people.
