From my biology book: "Cells live only as long as they engage in metabolism." I thought they could "hibernate" if they had to. Can they?

Yes they can... there a cases of bacteria hibernating in salt deep under ground for millions of years and coming back to life when water was added! Many species of bacteria are consider immortal in that their cells never die and they can continue metabolic activity for thousand of years without reproducing.
