No, CAPTCHA's are usually employed in a simple attempt to identify that a person is Human, that is all. Obviously if they are too simple then scripted robots are capable of full-filling the criteria that is usually applied in the test. However some of the more complex CAPTCHA's are apparently too difficult for humans to handle, finding the middle ground is difficult. A question that could be asked is why are you testing the CAPTCHA's if you already have a user-account?

No problem, you've answered. It's likely during the phase of attempting to fix the blank page problem that the CAPTCHA system might well have been changed purposely or accidentally.
