With the ever increasing ability of the internet to keep peoples from all difference countries in communication, will the internet eventually result in virtual governments?

The only power I want government to have is the ability to protect the rights of it's people. The personal rights of the individual to life and liberty. I don't think words on a computer screen could ever secure those rights. However, virtual governments exist. We have one right here at SciForums. Even the governments of nations are directing their business and agendas through their computers. So in some fashion there may be governments that tend to integrate computers as a medium or method of issuing orders.

Well, I really meant an organization with members tied via internet who agree to an allegiance to the organization above any allegiance to country.

A government has its power in laws, laws are enforced by the police and judicial system. Without these institutions there is no government.

There's probably quite a few already.

    Religions. Survivalists. Cults.

    And so on.

I can't see any truly global, meaningful, organisation with any power on the internet. Solely on the internet and made up of people in their houses at least.

Face to face meetings are important for trust.

With surveillance technology it's possible but unlikely anytime soon.
