I was thinking lately...perhaps the aliens are not talking to us because our math skills are not up to their level of expertise. Perhaps at some level math will become the language by which all talk. It takes great amounts of science and mathematical knowledge to get into space after all, all the technology involved for living in space, communications, war technology, all this will make the civilization rely more and more on math and data as communication. After all emotions could be lost within the population, as relaying data between each other becomes the principal way to talk. Could that be possible future? Math has the potential to describe anything after all, even music can be described by math, and thats just the beginning. Instead of saying I am going to the shop, I can be giving data of cartesian coordinates of location I am starting at and ending my trip and for purpose of the trip I can give a values that prove me being hungry from the rise of acid in my stomach...I mean it sounds silly, I guess. But it is possible to have everything described by math, but what about emotions? :bugeye:

I met a family once, a widow who has just lost her husband to cancer, he was a mathematician. The complexity of the math in books in his house that he read suggested to me that he was living in some other world, seen the world differently than the rest, saw it through math. His wife told me once that her husband told her this. Perhaps people will all turn out to be like him, living in a way of numbers and mathematical equations for everything.

    Quoting one math guys' blog:

How would they they know what our expertise is in mathematics?
You have to start at the bottom and establish common ground (in both directions) before you move up.
They'd HAVE to talk to us first just to find out we didn't have their expertise.

    Not really it isn't

Since emotions are more or less entirely subjective how could you describe them meaningfully mathematically?
Your level 10 of, say, love may be only be someone else's 7. But there's no way of comparing them to establish a common scale.

Complexity of mathematical relations...through a higher number of relations by which to judge love by.

And there's still no way you can let someone else experience the emotion you're feeling.
It doesn't matter how many relationships you get or he gets you cannot establish a common scale.

well not 100% of what the other is feeling...you are correct. But can you do it in real life? Love for one is another for the other.

describe your emotions to someone else and make them understand what you experience? Words cant do that.

    Exactly.
And you couldn't do it mathematically because it's subjective.

Maybe it could once we can understand the way the human brain works better. I've read some reports a while ago that claimed neurologists are already able to detect lies and fear in the brain using scanners.

As subjective as it may seem to be right now, maybe emotions are measurable, we just don't know how to do it yet.

Maybe one day couples could come in to see which partner loves the other one most... =O

its not that simple...you have to see it using emotions. division would be deminishing and taking opposite of the emotions experienced, multiplying would be allow these emotions to assume shape. Its quite difficult.

But you've already said that truth divided by beauty is reality, so...
    See it using emotions?
    Not my eyes?

why duplicate it? We can express it neatly on paper.

Instead of "I love you" a formula of intricate simplicity through complexity of itself, able to evoke emotion of love in us to it.

Its too hard, Oli. This is not simple stuff to feel.

    What, everything the brain does?

You're wandering into fruitcake land again Draq - "intricate simplicity through complexity of itself"
