All I can think of to say is "what a bunch of assholes." I don't eat fries that often, but if I start seeing this stuff appearing at the local mcdonalds then I will lose my mind and move to New Guinea or something.

I read a small article in Rolling Stone the other day, with the guitarist of Audioslave making some neoliberal points about American patriotism. He said something to the effect of how "it is only patriotic to question the actions of American politicians, not support them." A few months back a cool teacher of mine mentioned that he saw a great deal of similiarities between the fanatacism in the US and of Germany, before they let Hitler do his thing. I would never say that the situation here is exactly the same as it was in Pre-War Germany, but that the subtle similarities (blind patriotism) cannot be ignored. Bush looks like he's using the same method that Hitler did (possibly subconsciously?). He's saying that God is behind America, behind the American people--almost, almost but not quite saying that America itself is immortal.

Whereas Hitler went above and beyond what Bush would even think to consider at the moment, that the select Aryan breed of Germans were descendants of a superhuman master race. Condoleeza Rice mentioned that the US would fight any nation or group that threatened the idea of freedom (I'm pretty sure I saw the interview somewhere on this forum, I wish I could source what I'm saying here). To tie all of these things together, it's possible to conclude that a combination of blind patriotism and faith in a corrupt and despotic leader leads to, eventually, purely a war of conquest.

    But hey, who am I?

    Let them eat freedom

    I wonder if I can get Mexi-freedom-fries?

At any rate, common lore in the US reminds us that during our rounds with the Germans, Americans called "hamburgers" libery steaks, and the term "hot dog" arose to replace the Germanic "frankfurter".

I'll dig up links later if it turns out I'm the only one who ever heard of this.

    Tiassa,

The renaming of our fast food was mentioned at the bottom of the article provided by 567. But until now, I had never heard of this sort of thing occuring.

    I agree...

Patriotic - Feeling, expressing, or inspired by love for one's country.

Not the politicians or their policies, but the ideals of the country itself, which in part is to watch the gov't and change that which doesn't work.

the french are doing what they think is RIGHT in not causing needless loss of life for a vendetta and money

but no the french are evil

i HATE the french PM for his stand against imigration but i admire his willingness to send bush home with no supper over this issue

seems the french, russans and china are those i have to put my faith in seeing as my OWN countys goverment seems to have forgoten where its voters actully live

Yeah, well I never had thought much of the French, the ungratefuls. THEY asked for our help in Vietnam and they left our troops to die for their failed caused, then sat back and laughed when our troops came home in body bags. When our volunteeres went to repair their broken railroads, they spat on the kind neighbors we tried to be. When we asked them to repay the loans we gave them to prop themselves up after we saved their country from total aniahlation, they got mad at us just for asking.

France has at least in my mind, shown themselves to be two-timing and backstabbing. Then again, this probably won't ever change. They will allie with anyone who offers them a footstool twards power and security, and then promptly walk out on you when it suits them.

    Did I miss something?

Well, that's a bit of a generalization, I'm sure all of the french aren't like that. I'm not sure if I've ever really spoken to someone from france, we mainers live such secluded lives. I might have, but, I don't remember...

    Xevious,

Let's not forget, if it wasn't for the French, there probably would be no U.S.A.. And everytime you look at the Statue of Liberty, you see a gift from France.

France is not anti-American, they are simply anti-Bush. I don't remember the US having problems with France during the Clinton administration.

    The 3 quotes above:
Thank you for validating my faith in the intelligence of the western human race.

This foolish individual concerns me and saddens me deeply.
This individual has not yet matured his thoughts when analysing the facts.
If there is one country that is renouwned to go in, take all and get out in a backstabbing fashion it's the U.S. :

American Indians, Mexico, Brazil, Chilie, Venezuela, Zaire, Ethiopia, Viet-Nam, Korea, El Salvadore, Panama, Cuba, Columbia, Isreal/Palestine, Afganistan and now Iraq.
And I haven't even mentionned all of the U.S. owned corporations that use slave labor around the world: Wal-Mart, Nike, Addidas, Coke... in India, Bengladesh, Taiwan...

If France backstabbed, it would have to had promised something and not followed through. Yet it has not promised anything, it has been very straight foward, with no illusions.
    Thus no backstabbing.

Every time some one bashes the French, most especially with the comment “if it weren’t for us, you’d be speaking German now,” it brings to mind the facts that America owes its independence to foreign intervention and aid, especially from France. For those Americans who slept through their history classes:

The French sent arms, clothing, and ammunition to America, as well as soldiers. The French monarchy kept the United States government solvent by lending it the money to keep the Revolution alive. At the battle of Yorktown, a combined force of 7800 French troops and 9000 American marched southward from New York and surrounded Lord Cornwallis’s army of 8500 at Yorktown. Washington's men were clothed by the French, used French rifles and were paid with French gold. It was the French Navy, sailing northward from the West Indies that succeeded in sealing off the entrance to Chesapeake Bay, trapping Cornwallis's soldiers at Yorktown by preventing English ships sent from New York from rescuing the British army.

And in a cruel twist of fate, French assistance to America led to the financial collapse of the French ancien regime - the bankruptcy of Louis XVI was one of the major causes of the French Revolution.

    :m: Peace.

OK, I probably went to far. I'll fess up to that one and admit it. The French people as a whole were not what I was upset about, its actions by the French government. Yes we owe them from time past, but it just seems that here lately France and America haven't exactly been friendly twards each other since World War II. At least in the last half of the last centuy, the time we have lived in, France hasn't seemed particularly friendly.
