WHen I boot it up, turn on bios, the temperature in the processor zone is around 199 F, that CANT BE GOOD! i bought this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118115
for my CPU, which is a p4, 533mhz fsb, 2.93ghz processor. any ideas? i mean, its a new motherboard (less than a year old), and the hard drive is fine, i recently applied new solution to the heatsink and fan/processor, there HAS to be something wrong! someone help please.

Hmmm... are you using the proper thermal grease?

there can be a number of things
first you said you recently applied new heatsink material to your cpu
the best to use is silicon dioxide
and make sure the heatsink is snug when you clip it on

next you said you bought a fan for it
it it moving enough air through the sink?
is it blowing the right way? towards the cpu

third is you are running overclocking software

fourth are you sure about the temp? have you measured it?
it could be the sensor on the mobo is defective

Something probably very wrong with the fan. Is it running? Have you perhaps attached the fan upside-down?

If it runs all day reporting this temp then you have no problems. If it randomly crashes, fails boots, or makes strange sounds then you have a problem.

Sometimes the temperature sensor can fail. Is the temperature anomaly constant or variable?

the fan and heatsink is properly installed, and it randomly fails, at least once a day due to thermal failure. everything is snug, id ont understand.

I had a similar occurance once with an older CPU in the computer I use, it's temp was far higher than it should of been. It turned out however that when the CPU had been installed the person who installed it somehow slide the cpu passed the thermal paste so the CPU was directly contacting the Heatsink.

Make sure that the thermal paste is stopping such a contact of surfaces.

You might also want to check that your BIOS is set correctly, as the wrong settings can/will overclock the CPU generating a higher temperature than normal. Long term use at this level will result in the system degrade (RAM, Motherboard or CPU failure)

P4s arent designed to be used with stock coolers. either turn down the clock speed by about 20%, or buy a GOOD heatsink+fan

ive heard of it before...

and the solution was to cut a hole in the sliding metal panel.. and install a large fanm which will blow right onto the little fan cooling the cpu...

in this way.. you stop using the little dumb fan.. and you turbocharge it.. with the big fan...

Ehh, at these temperatures it is likely that your cpu would not even run for a long amount of time. To add to that it wouldn't be 199F moments after the start up. It is simply a mistake of the installation or like some one said the heatsink is probably directly being touched.

well, P4's should run between 37 and 47C (max of 120F); the maximum safe temp they should reach under load is about 70C (166F) - so if you're really at 199F (82.5C), then the proc might be melted by now.

Does the machine still boot? What motherboard are you using? Maybe the temp sensor is bad?

yah I recently had the same problem on a laptop. I just jammed some artic cool heatsink grease (or some brand like that, can't remember the brand for sure), pasted on more that I probably should have. No problems now.

My computer shut down last evening. I check the temp and it is 100C. But the source of the mayhem was easily found. I opened it up and the CPU fan was not spinning anymore.

bloody annoying though and let's hope there was no damage to the CPU.

If your CPU is at 199F, even diamond paste (if it exists) wouldn't help you much.

lol, you should see the crazy heatsink I just put on my video card...
