View Full Version : Bye bye, Van Goghe
invert_nexus 09-12-04, 08:49 PM Well, I just found out that there has been a Van Goghe exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum and today is the last day. 6 hours to go and lines around the block. It would take me about an hour to get down there, who knows how many hours in line, and I'm tempted to to go.
But, I probably won't. I'm very disappointed that I found out about this so late. Van Goghe has always been one of my favorite artists and I've missed my chance. If I had someone to go with, I'd undoubtably go. But, all the people who would be able to go on such short notice wouldn't because they're uncultured cretins.
I almost feel like cutting off my ear and sending it to the Art Museum in protest of my not being made aware of this exhibit earlier.
Anyway, I guess this thread is just a kick me thread.
So kick me for missing this chance to see a master's work.
Maybe people could share their experiences at seeing Van Goghe first hand. Or maybe even other artists that they feel are masters. Post pics, links, etc...
I'd love to have some pic resources that are good enough quality to use for a desktop background and etc...
I'm so pissed at myself. I haven't been watching television lately as a self-improvement kick and so I've ironically lost this chance because of my desire to kick the tv demon. Bastard fate. Ironic existence. Bah!

eincloud 09-12-04, 09:20 PM Oh my god, if I missed the chance to see that I would be so sad. Man you are so lucky I hope you work your ass down there and just pay someone in the front to let you in and then you will see the true brilliance.
Van gogh art is breathtaking. I highly recommend the "Biography" DVD. When I first saw it on the Biography Channel, I was blown away. It was the most beautiful of any biography. It shows alot of his work while detailing his slow journey toward insanity and his profound love for his brother. I'm not an art connoisseur by any means, but when looking at a Van Gogh, you can see his passion in every violent, yet calming brush stroke.

fadingCaptain 09-14-04, 09:50 AM I saw a van gogh exhibit in chicago several years ago. It was a large exhibit with his paintings from the amsterdam museum as it was under renovation.
I have always been a fan of van goghs work. His style appeals to me and I can just look at his paintings and enjoy them without trying to 'figure them out'.
Well, all I can say is you have to see his work up close and in person. Honestly, seeing pictures of his works in books or on video does absolutey no justice to the power of some of his paintings. It is another experience altogether to see the textures, size, and colors in person.
It was a powerful experience for me. I was alone so I got to take my time and I had half a day to take it all in.
Probably the most stunning for me were the series of self portraits. It is like you have a window into his soul. I have never seen expressions and feelings so clear on paint. Again, looking at these in a book is no substitute. Starry night, cafe, and the sower are also incredibly impressive. No matter how many times you've seen these images...seeing the big canvas tower in front of you with the thick paint is a revelation.
So....sorry man. Go to amsterdam if possible.
