I thought it might be a nice idea to have a thread where you can recommend movies for the evening to other SciForumers.

    I'll start.

    First movie would be:

    Haute Tension

    Year: 2003
    Country: France
    Genre: Horror/Psychological Thriller
    Directed By: Alexandre Aja
    Rate: 6.8/10

    Plot:

Two college friends, Marie and Alexa, face sudden horror on holiday at Alexa's parent's country home when a mysterious killer invades it.

    Review:

Alexandre Aja directed this movie three years before his Hollywood debut - remake of "The Hills Have Eyes".
This movie, based on Dean Koontz's novel "Intensity" is bloody and shocking, with wonderfully created suspense. Although is not the first movie based on this story, it's much better than its American predecessor ("Intensity", 1997).
Gore and special effects are work of famous Giannetto De Rossi who worked with Lucio Fulci.

    My rate: 8/10

For those who don't like this kind of movies, here's another one:

    The Man from Earth

Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

    Year: 2007
    Country: USA
    Genre: SF/Drama
    Directed By: Richard Schenkman
    Rate: 8.4/10

    Plot:

A goodbye party for Prof. John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues that he is an immortal who has walked the Earth for 14,000 years.

    Review:

In today's world of 'shallow' movies, where the most important thing is better exploitation of CGI, this movie was a true refreshment.
Based on the writing of Jerome Bixby, this movie offers just great story that holds you breathless till the end. No lasers, no expensive sets, no Tom Cruise, just simple and wonderfully crafted story.
Not for everyone, though. The rest will enjoy.

    My rate: 9/10

    Deep Throat

A sexually frustrated woman (Linda Lovelace, credited as playing "Herself") asks her friend Helen (played by Dolly Sharp) for advice on how to achieve an orgasm. After a sex party provides no help, Helen recommends that Linda visit a doctor (played by Harry Reems). The doctor discovers that Linda's clitoris is located in her throat; she then goes on to work as a therapist for the doctor and performs a particular technique of oral sex—thereafter known as "deep throat"—on various men, until she finds the one to marry. Meanwhile, the doctor has sex with his blonde nurse (played by Carol Connors). The movie ends with the line "The End. And Deep Throat to you all."

The movie, 61 minutes long, is intended to be funny with highly corny dialogues and songs, fireworks going off and bells ringing during orgasm.

The various explicit scenes of oral, anal and vaginal sex acts led to an X rating by the MPAA film rating system.

On June 5, 1972, the movie received a glowing review by Al Goldstein in his Screw magazine. Only two full-length (and lesser known) heterosexual hardcore porn movies had been released previously in the U.S.: Mona in 1970 and School Girl in 1971. Together with the gay-themed Boys in the Sand, released in December, 1971, and Behind the Green Door which was also released in 1972 and widely shown in mainstream theatres, Deep Throat started a brief period of "porno chic" when it was considered cool in some circles to go see porn movies, even in mixed company. Several mainstream celebrities were seen watching Deep Throat, including Truman Capote, Jack Nicholson and Johnny Carson. The phenomenon was described and the movie reviewed in an influential 5 page article in The New York Times[1].

Unlike Behind the Green Door, Deep Throat's fame does not primarily root from its explicitness but from the fact that it set some of the main conventions of modern pornography: a synopsis made up of different segments of graphic sex, attached with a minimal plot.

The movie's title became a pop culture reference, most notably when then-Washington Post managing editor Howard Simons chose "Deep Throat" as the pseudonym for a Watergate informant, many years later revealed to be W. Mark Felt.

Several writers have conjectured that Douglas Adams chose the name of the Deep Thought supercomputer in the science fiction comedy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1978) as a parody on the movie's title. Adams himself said only, "The name is a very obvious joke." [2]

    Year: 2004
    Country: Germany
    Genre: Horror
    Directed By: Andreas Marschall
    Rate: 5.2/10

    Plot:

Three stories: DEVI, SHAKTI and KALI tell about experimental group called Taylor - Eriksson, which leads people on journeys into themselves. Those journeys leave damage, that turns into bigger horror.

    Review:

    Not bad. For horror lovers.
Story is good, but not well crafted into movie. Movie has few really scary (and bloody) moments, but it still lacks 'something'.
Anyway, it's much better than a lot of new horror entries.

    My rate: 7/10

I've got to be honest, I thought 'Haute Tension' (or 'Switchblade Romance' as it was called here in Blighty) was pretty weak.

The initial home invasion scene was pretty tense (why was she was fapping with headphones on anyway?) but from that point onwards the whole thing took a real dive imo. I won't go into detail so as not to ruin it for anyone who chooses to watch it but this film had more holes in it than your average slasher movie victim.

I have an incredible tolerance for sh*tty horror movies & if you're anything like me in that regard it's worth a look but don't expect anything too remarkable.

Modern horror movies have too much emphasis on gore & no real effort in terms of tension/character/plot. My two cents says the best horror movie from recent years in 'Wolf Creek'

I was going to put a link to the imdb page here in case people didn't know 'Wolf creek' but it won't let me as my post count is too low. Boo urns.

    Cheers matey.

Yeah The Descent was pretty good, I thought it took a while to get going but that first glimpse of the monsters (I think they're vampires but that's a whole other thread) is superb.

Pinocchio - Darkman is the worst Liam Neeson you've ever seen?! I take it you didn't bother seeing the new Star Wars movies then. At least Darkman knows it's kind of rubbish.

    DOBERMAN 1997

    DIRECTOR -JAN KOUEN

stars- VINCENT CASSEL & MONICA BELLUCI

About a double bank heist by a gang of hardened crimminals (who are the good guys) ,and, the ends that a meglomaniac policeman will go to to stop the DOBERMAN.
I just looked up the director's name and the site compared it to a loud, cartoonish Natural Born Killers, but for me if you like Tarrantinos gangster films p/fiction,killing zoe,res/dogs then ur in for a treat, this is a must see.

I saw the descent with out knowing much about it and thought it was great.

darkman vs phantom menace pfff.. I may have to agree with you leo , the disappointment from watching the p/menace after the build up was traumatic
