View Full Version : Bush's war: Immaculate deception - or - flat out lies? Abdullathebomber 06-30-03, 01:08 AM http://www.presidentialrhetoric.com/speeches/05.01.03.responses.html Read & Worry, :( Abdulla.... Tiassa 06-30-03, 06:11 PM It's not that I don't think people should worry, but about what aspect exactly should they worry? One subtext I see is an aspect of statesmanship. Byrd, like Lincoln, is playing according to certain rules. In both cases, the condemnation is explicit according to the rules of American politics, and in both cases it is devastating. But in this sense we must bear in mind that the failure of many insurgent groups is a failure to play "within the rules". I think it was Wesmorris who noted, a couple of weeks ago, that in order to fulfill one's principles, one must sacrifice those principles. But those insurgencies that did play by the rules inevitably moderated to support few changes to the status quo. However, in this grander context .... .... I think the statements are encouraging. Bush is a clown, an imposter, and only his core supporters and a large number of exasperated, violent people support him. The majority of the world knows that Bush is out of control and out of line. What to do about it ... well, that requires a softer touch. But for Byrd, an entrenched career politician with a spotty record and heaps of political credibility, to come out and blister the President like grand-daddy with a strop is actually an encouraging sign. In the beginning, it was only Seattle's traditionally-goofy Jim McDermott, and then there came Kucinich and a few others. But to have Byrd lash out like this ... in the American political context it is both significant and encouraging. As to the issues addressed by Byrd's statement, I agree that there are things to worry about, else such statements would not be needed; this was the case in Lincoln's day, as well. That people draw the historical parallel and, furthermore, are refusing to let it retreat into the shadows of history, is encouraging. Despite the discouraging behavior of the American president, people are not simply writing him carte blanche the way they did in the days after our towers fell down. So when I read that link, I'm encouraged. However, I'm aware that I'm probably missing your point. Thus the original question. :m:, Tiassa  spookz 06-30-03, 06:27 PM worry about the dung that the bomber is gonna drop on us? gassing the us with camel farts? its funny how the bomber can see shit in the most innocuous of things otheadp 06-30-03, 07:14 PM Americans should worry there are Abdullathebomber's and Jihad_Alif's living among them. spookz 06-30-03, 07:45 PM bullshit even the bomber is preferable to your crap otheadp 06-30-03, 08:05 PM what do you mean by "your crap"? spookz 06-30-03, 08:28 PM i truly apologize. lemme rephrase even the bomber is preferable to your ignorant american ass otheadp 06-30-03, 08:47 PM my friend, i live in Canada nico 06-30-03, 08:51 PM Spookz I wouldn't say ignorant just yet that's reserved for others, but mis-guided yes.
