why do people think Burkas are 'keeping the woman down'. Isn't it about modesty? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
And how does telling muslim women they are wrong and their modesty is wrong, help them be better people?
It doesn't. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! But don't let that stop you. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Because in most places where the Burka is worn, it is a requirement-- women aren't given the choice. In those same places, women are freely beaten and subjugated under the thumb of men. Being a second class citizen in Muslim nations is a way of life for women. In places like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran (for example) women can be jailed for immodesty-- for merely showing their arms. One never hears of the same thing for men. No one is denying that Muslim women can get a great education and are quite well informed. THAT has nothing to do with it. It comes down to choice and freedom. If you are REQUIRED to cover your face-- then it's not freedom at all. ~String
so if Amish women are required to wear modest dress and those little caps, they too are not free? Nuns are not free? I am required to wear clothing or I will be arrested. Does that mean I am not free? Or is it just covering the face that bothers people?
Do we? The only time I remember a stink about it was down in FL where they tried to petition for having their drivers license pictures taken whilst wearing them, head piece included. How fuckin stupid do you have to be to try to challenge this? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I'm sorry but this is one case where law/common sense should trump religious freedom. Only in America. http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/06/06/florida.license.veil/ Other than issues like the one above, if they want to wear the burqa, have at it.
Nearly ever shop in the UK has cct so thieves can be recognised, shop assistants will not serve some one wearing a crash helmet or any thing that covers the face, it may be a sad sign westerners do not have the right to wear what ever they want and be treated equally. Any visitor to our country should understand the reasons for showing their face.
Show me a law in the USA that requires women to wear dresses or habits? I'm referring to the LAWS of the land, not the individual choices of sub-communities. Furthermore, women CHOOSE to become nuns as adults-- having been raised as typical free women. Religous garments of those who commit to a life of religious service are totally incomparable to a Muslim nation's legal proscriptions to women which are carried out under the threat of fines and imprisonment. You also bring up the Amish, who, conveniently do not force any of their members to remain Amish. I live in Ohio, right outside the Amish country. As a child I was "baby-sat" by Amish girls. They are HARDLY forced to do anything and I have known MANY men and women who decided to forgo the simple and unclutterd lifestyle of the Amish in order to become part of mainstream America. Also, upon reaching adulthood, all Amish youth (at least in the counties in Ohio-- each sect of Amish have different doctorine, though they generally vary little between counties) are encoraged to engage in rumspringa, during which time they generally experience a degree of life outside their usual surroundings in order to make a more INFORMED and ACCEPTABLE choice and committment. So, please tell me how these two things are the same as Muslim women being forced, both culturally and legally to wear a bruka. ~String
