The defence secretary, Des Browne, today gave the go-ahead for the construction of two long-awaited new aircraft carriers at a cost of £3.9bn.
The 65,000 tonne vessels will be three times the size of the Royal Navy's current aircraft carriers and the largest ever delivered to the service. They will be built in the UK and are due to enter service in 2014 - two years later than originally planned - and 2016.

'Bout time. The British have been out of the "kicking ass and taking names, navally" business for a while now. At least when they get these built, they'll have better force projection capability for their military.

I really wonder what the point is though... or is it part of "modernizing" the navy?

Not really that expensive considering the first Stealth bombers were 2 bill each. Certainly better bang for the buck. Will the "Enterprise" still be the fastest?

They are naming them 'Queen Elizabeth' and 'Prince of Wales'. Good choice, seeing as they will cost a fortune and are basically useless.

As an ex Boy Seaman one wonders where the superbly trained crew will come from, with todays run down facilities.
