Somebody i know says at the local market they were selling boxs that people could plug into their computer to allow their computer to use someone else's broadband connection for free. I dont know if there is such a thing or if its true. Anyone heard anything about it?

Doesn't really surprise me. But do you know how they do it at all?

    Isn't it hacking ?

In fact I know that some computers (mainly notebooks) are saled with a wireless card. "Nice, I've got it thus I can connect to a wireless network if I have too !!!".
The problem is coming when the owner don't know that its wireless card is activated (under Windows at least) by defaults... As he don't have any firewall, it's an open door to hackers ! That's the only way I know to steal broadband (but connecting yourself to someone else cables

Supposedly that was something that certain "Stock Exchanges" suffered from was the wireless networks, which is a real problem, after it wouldn't take much to access such systems from another room even outside.

Wireless networking is something extremely scarey if it's done on a mass comercial scale since you have only the frequency bandwidth the networks are restricted to to try and make it unique and none crackable.

Reminds me of an issue with "clone phones" but thats a totally different kettle of fish.

I'm not sure how much it happens now, but back in the day, people used to steal the individual codes that identify your cell phone as your cell phone. Using this code and a dummy phone that is programmable they could basically "spoof" your phone and make calls anywhere they wanted.

The reason I dont think it happens too much anymore is because its rather silly to make calls like that because if you rack up too much of a bill and the person realizes it, the cell company has a record of almost your exact location at all the times of the call.

It was (and still is?) possible to clone NMT cellphones, this isn't possible with GSM. Someone once told me how to do this and why it isn't possible with the current generation of cellphones but I wasn't paying enough attention to remember it.

If you bring your laptop close to my house, it would work.
