Thank the sciforum god for listening to our prays in such short order and bringing back avatars (for free even!) now let us all pray for the return of signatures as well.

Signature like an avatar can provided a useful first impression of a member by showing what their beliefs are... or if they are insane. Take for example my classic set of ATHF quotes like this one:

“Plaque is a figment of the liberal media and the dental industry to scare you into buying useless appliances and pastes, now I have read the arguments from both sides, and I haven’t found any evidence yet to support the need to brush your teeth… ever!”
Master Shake; Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Infection: 0:55-1:10

Please vote to bring back this wonderful form of self-expression.

Signatures are visually distracting and disrupt the aesthetic of the site. And seriously, why do you need another meaningless form of self-expression? You've got your username, avatar, user title, and the text of your post to annoy everyone with your personality.

Well then could we have a trade, say each person can choose to have a signature OR a avatar.

Why not put one's blindingly witty comment in one's user title?
The answer to your question is that that sort of system would be impossible to implement.

Well it would just require some program writing time on your part.

The title can't hold that much.

Yah, that's why it ain't gonna happen. sciforums is always going to be an unprofitable side-project for me. I cannot waste time doing unnecessary things for it.

The title can't hold that much.

You'll just have to improve your word-wit ratio.

Yeah I don't really see the need for signatures to be on every post. No matter what it is it won't be as good everytime. It just gets tedious after a while.
We have signatures in our profile or whatever, thats good enough for me.

and Profiry what ever happen to donations for features?

Please let me change my signature it is rather out dated. :( I'm fine with them only being in the profile

After a while it will get really really annoying. So I would hope it would not come back.

Signatures are ugly and usually not put to very good use. I said no.

So it is agreed. Signatures are not coming back and they should shot for ever being here.

Perhaps I should redesign the question and argument: “Should Self descriptions (signatures) be allowed in the profile?

You can close this thread Porfiry.

I would like signatures, but from other forums I know that some have very, very, very long ones (about 20 times as long as this post is going to be) so perhaps it is better to leave them deactivated. If activated a limitation would be useful, that would result in more work, would it not? ;)

Signatures aren't coming back. This is an aesthetic issue.
