The Science section of the NY Times (3 October 2006) had an article about OBE (Astral Projection) perceptions being caused by electrical stimulation of a specific part of the brain.

Two women were being evaluated for epilepsy surgery at University hospital in Geneva. Dozens of electrodes were inserted into their brains in order to identify abnormal tissue causing seizures and to locate vital areas to be avoided during surgery. When a particular area was stimulated, the patients reported astral projection experiences. Their perception was that they were floating in the air watching their body on the examination table.

Olaf Blanke at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland is the neurosurgeon who carried out the experiments. Dr. Blanke reported that the women had ordinary psychiatric histories and were astonished by the perceptions. Another doctor stated that there is nothing mystical about these perceptions.

The NY times article cited articles in the 21 September issue of Nature and the February 2004 issue of the journal Brain.
